Prior to full implementation of the Affordable Care Act, Kansas had an uninsured rate below the national average and similar to states that would later expand Medicaid; however, the advantage for Kansas has disappeared. For the first time, the uninsured rate in Kansas (9.2 percent) in 2021 was higher than the U.S. overall rate (8.6 percent).
