In partnership with Save The Children, great people came together, packed kits in the hundreds, and spread joy like confetti! 🎉✨ Although I was a volunteer myself helping on the operations side of it, there were a lot of faces behind the scenes and the sheer awesomeness that unfolded during our volunteering event was a force for good 🤩✨ 🙌 Let's give a round of applause to Nyah Campbell Emily Crane Niki Ward Sinem Kina Ingrid Iradukunda Mudiwa Dutiro Max Shillam Gillian Maxwell Taylor Green Daisy Harvey and all the other phenomenal volunteers who made it happen. Amazon #Volunteering in #MUC3 This week, we were able to implement our long-planned volunteering project together with Parkschule Stadtbergen. Under the expert guidance of forest ranger Lorenz Hochhauser, 100 climate-tolerant trees were planted in Deuringer at marked locations. Subsequently, they were equipped with a protective sleeve to prevent browsing by wild animals. The students were actively supported by our employees from MUC3. Amazon's support is part of an internal program called "Amazon Volunteering". This program gives Amazon employees the opportunity to volunteer during their regular working hours for local social projects, either through practical support, as in this case, or through their expertise. The action was rounded off with a joint snack on-site. As team's across Amazon came together to give back during the Global Month of Volunteering in September (https://lnkd.in/gUeycXy2), I was reminded of the incredible impact that volunteering can have on fostering engagement and empathy within the workplace. When we encourage employees to get involved in volunteer activities, we're not only making a positive difference in our communities but also nurturing a sense of purpose and fulfillment within our teams. Volunteering allows us to step outside the confines of our daily work routines and connect with causes that resonate with our values. It gives us the opportunity to contribute our skills and expertise to make a tangible impact on the lives of others. And guess what? This sense of fulfillment doesn't just stay confined to our volunteer work; it spills over into our professional lives too! By engaging in volunteer activities, we develop a deeper sense of empathy, compassion, and teamwork. We learn to appreciate the diverse perspectives and experiences of those around us, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative work environment. But it doesn't stop there! Volunteering also strengthens the bond between employees, creating a sense of camaraderie and unity. When we come together as a team to support a cause, we build trust, respect, and a shared sense of purpose. This, in turn, boosts morale, employee satisfaction, and overall engagement within the workplace. Volunteerism is near and dear to my heart, and it's important to me to work for a company whose corporate social responsibility values match my own. This study and Dropbox's stance on volunteerism make my heart happy. 💡"The study, which analyzed data from 46,336 workers across over 230 companies, found nearly all interventions, including resilience training, access to sleep apps, and online coaching, did not benefit employee well-being. There was one notable exception, however: Volunteering did positively correlate with improved workplace well-being."🫶 At Dropbox, over 45 nonprofits are supported by our employees. We host biannual, company-wide days of service that encourages Dropboxers around the world to get involved in their communities. I’m sure many have now seen the news that the AmazonSmile program is being wound down. This was so difficult to accept for myself and many others that spent large chunks of their careers building something special. In my case, it’s been my entire professional career so far. I’ve written and rewritten this a few times to make sure it wasn’t an emotional reaction and that I had time to really digest the decision. I think I have now. I started on Smile as a bright eyed fresh grad with no knowledge of what it took to build systems for Smile’s scale. What I did quickly learn was that we had generated “only” $50 million in donations at the time. Today, that number is closer to $500 million. With 6 years of tenure, I fall somewhere between the old and new timers of Smile. I wasn’t there for the pitches to build this peculiar program. And I wasn’t there to see the first donations start rolling through. However, I have been around long enough to remember launching the program to the UK. I remember starting the multi year effort to launch Smile to the mobile app. And so much more. Smile gave me more than I ever expected it could. It’s where I met strong mentors, best friends, and even a significant other. It gave me continuous opportunities to progress my career from an entry level engineer to a senior software engineer, and it opened my eyes to doing good for multiple parties with my day to day work. For these, I’m forever grateful. I’m fortunate enough to have an opportunity on a new team which I’ll share more on down the road. For now though, my immediate focus is to ensure we wind things down in a way that does right by customers and that charities get the final donations they deserve. However, many of my former colleagues weren’t so lucky and will be looking for new opportunities. Please keep an eye out and let me/them know if you identify any potential good fits. These are all extraordinary people/employees. I hope the industry sees Smile as a successful initiative rather than a failed experiment. While it no longer aligned with Amazon’s desired altruistic direction, that doesn’t mean it didn’t work. Those donations are real, and I believe Amazon is proud of them. I know I am.

POSITIVE LESSONS LEARNT FROM VOLUNTEERING. *EVERYONE HAS A STORY When you volunteer for a community in need, you realize that everyone has a story about who they are and how they got to where they are. *THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY. Most volunteer projects are for the benefit of the “community”. When you participate and serve in these projects, you automatically become part of the community. *DON'T ’t TAKE WHAT YOU HAVE FOR GRANTED While most people have hot showers, flushing toilets, and automatic light switches when they need them, there are many people around the world who live without them and live happily ever after *THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN ! No matter who you are or where you go, there will always be something that someone else can teach you. Open up your mind, see things differently, and be ready for lessons you didn’t expect. Happy New Year everyone! With this new year starting, wanted to quickly take stock. As the grind picks (right back up!), and we turn to setting professional goals for 2024, just a reminder to think 2024 personal goals as well. As we crush through our "9-5", how about our "5-9"? I know several of us think family goals, hobbies, etc., but don't forget about service as well. I know we all have heavy burdens on our time, but if you can free some up, what might you be able to apply it towards? Is there a club or organization looking for new volunteer board members, local humane society just itching for volunteers to help with cleaning or dog walks, local non-profits that could use your specific skill set, take a CPR/BLS class, perhaps an opportunity to participate in public service by running for office?
