Environmental Impact Story: War Memorial Gym at Virginia Tech Originally built in 1926 with only one significant remodel in 1975, the 201,000 gross-square-foot building on Virginia Tech’s campus was in dire need of a refresh. As the Collegiate Times reported, you could definitely tell the War Memorial Gym was old and it was time to say goodbye. Working with Whiting-Turner, ISI Demolition handled the demolition for the project in the fall of 2022. For this project, ISI Demolition diverted 726.66 tons of total waste including 93.5 tons of metal, 25.68 tons of wood, and 598.18 tons of concrete, masonry, and asphalt aggregate. Yesterday, students from 10 high schools across Detroit gathered to compete in Atlantic Impact’s inaugural ‘Build Detroit: Skilled Trades Challenge' at Eastern Market. The competition was a huge success, and we would like to thank everyone who helped make the day great! The Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union, Local 2 of Michigan coordinated and judged the masonry competition; Morrey's Contracting judged the carpentry competition; Sachse Construction sponsored prizes for the winners and recruited several volunteers, whom were an enormous help in facilitating a seamless event; Herc Rentals sponsored a much-needed forklift for the day; and 10 local businesses attended the business showcase to share their work and employment opportunities with over 100 local high school students, 'Build Detroit' competitors, and curious members of the community!
