Very cool to see the integration of LLMs trained exclusively on medical data (MedLM) within the Vertex AI platform. This will make it much easier for healthcare & life science organisations to ground these models in their own data and apply them to their own use cases

Google Cloud announced significant new features at the HLTH'23 conference. These features combine Generative AI with medically-tuned search for healthcare and life sciences data, including electronic health records. See https://lnkd.in/eAbnG5k4 and https://lnkd.in/e_-TXBra. The announcement of these new features has attracted the attention of many writers in the business press and trade press, eg Forbes, CNBC and Infoworld.
There is no doubt that these new capabilities are powerful and should in the long run assist clinicians. The trick will be to weave them into existing clinical workflows without adding new tasks to already overburdened clinicians. Change management and training will be essential here.

Google Cloud has just launched an innovative AI-powered search tool that will revolutionize the healthcare industry. No more digging through piles of paperwork or scrolling through endless records – doctors can now access all the vital patient information they need in one place! 😲
This groundbreaking technology not only saves time but also ensures accuracy, eliminating any concerns about incorrect responses.
Imagine being able to simply ask a question like "What medications has this patient taken in the last 12 months?" and instantly finding the answer without any hassle. With Google Cloud's new search capabilities, it's now possible!
Not only will this streamline processes for doctors, but it will also prevent frustration and ensure better patient care.
This remarkable tool doesn't stop there – it can even assist with crucial tasks such as applying billing codes and determining clinical trial eligibility. The potential impact on healthcare efficiency is immense!
The health-care industry possesses vast amounts of valuable data, but accessing it has never been straightforward due to different systems and formats. By making relevant and accurate information easily available, healthcare workers will save precious time and energy that could be better spent caring for patients.
Now I want to hear from you: What other applications do you foresee for this incredible technology? Share your thoughts below and let's discuss how we can maximize its potential in transforming the healthcare landscape!

How can AI help Doctors do their magic? Another step in the path to helping Docs serve patients was announced by Google Cloud's today at HLTH: New" artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities that will help clinicians quickly access information from different data sources" (I hope that means all my records across three states, umpteen healthcare systems and doctors, gazillion formats, EMRs...and everything else). A doctor could ask, “What medications has this patient taken in the last 12 months?” and get an answer.
This would be magic!
Aashima Gupta, (Global director of health care strategy and solutions at Google Cloud) I loved what you said, " connecting the dots from the patient perspective has long been health care’s journey, but it’s hard. Now, we are at a point where AI is being helpful in these very practical use cases.”

The big tech players continue making a play for a piece of the healthcare pie, this time by using AI applications. The Google teams recent steps in the healthcare AI space centered around their MedLM model is reviewed in the article below.
The current healthcare system resource constraints and unreliability of some AI model outputs means players like Google are focusing on operational efficacy, and less on clinical diagnosis and recommendations.
It is early days in this space, as quoted by a stakeholder in the article "“What I would say right now, is that the hype around the current use of these AI models in health care is outstripping the reality”. Still Rome wasn't built in one day, and impressive progress is being made and will continue to be made as technology becomes more reliable and accepted.

MedLM is a family of Google foundation models, fine-tuned for healthcare. Announced today and now available to allowlisted Google Cloud healthcare customers, this is an important step in bringing these technical advances to healthcare in a safe, responsible, and scalable way.
Nice summary by CNBC below, and you can also read the official announcement from Yossi Matias and Aashima Gupta at https://lnkd.in/eWQh_HKu.
One of the things I really like about the announcement blog is that it highlights work with our partners like HCA Healthcare, Augmedix, BenchSci, Accenture, and Deloitte, rather than just focusing on the model.

As always, Google moves fast to disrupt. Interesting announcement today - let’s see when this starts getting adopted by health systems.
“Google Cloud's new search tool will allow doctors to pull information from clinical notes, scanned documents and electronic health records so it can be accessed in one place…The new features will be offered to health and life sciences organizations through Google's Vertex AI Search platform, which companies in other industries can already use to conduct searches across public websites, documents and other databases. The specific offering for health care builds on Google's existing Healthcare API and Healthcare Data Engine products. “
