Contemplating ways to enhance job opportunities for individuals with disabilities within developmental organizations and private sectors is crucial. Unfortunately, these individuals encounter numerous obstacles that hinder their access to opportunities, with a significant barrier being the negative mindset of employers toward them. Altering such mindsets is a complex task, given that stereotypical perceptions are influenced by a myriad of factors including culture, belief systems, social norms, existing policies, schooling, upbringing, and community attitudes toward people with disabilities. Before addressing job opportunities, it is imperative to formulate a comprehensive plan aimed at dismantling these deeply ingrained and powerful barriers. # Inclusive job opportunity## Braek barriers## change mindset## disability friendly policies##

What Disability Workplace Inclusion Is Actually About: Disability workplace inclusion is not about discovering how many people with disabilities work for you, or about hiring talented people with disabilities. From a social standpoint - these actions have limited worth. Disability workplace inclusion is about getting chronically unemployed individuals with disabilities – employed. Doing that saves lives, and from a social standpoint such actions are dramatic and priceless. Corporation's diversity reports need to be able to state with complete integrity – 'we constantly have a trickle of people with disabilities who were previously chronically unemployed, successfully join us'. When this becomes the norm, the world will be truly blessed.

Did you know that 222,454 adults in Rhode Island have a disability? That equals 25% or 1 in 4 Rhode Islanders! March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. SkillsRI and workABILITY are proud to join the campaign to promote awareness this month and every month through our efforts to support I/DD job seekers on their employment journey. Last week, the workABILITY Team was invited to host a Disabilities Awareness Training for the staff at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence. The training was meant to educate and equip Trinity staff with the information needed to engage people with disabilities, apply best practices to improve communication and collaboration across their organization and provide tools to help create an even more inclusive and accommodating environment for everyone. The training was well attended by Trinity staff across multiple departments of the organization, including HR, ticketing, costumes, carpentry, marketing, and others, and included engaging Q&A's, experiential learning exercises, and best practices in promoting inclusion and belonging across the organization. "Trinity Repertory Company is already a great partner to workABILITY and the disabilities community of jobseekers. We provided this customized training to go deeper with them on their commitment to Inclusion and Belonging- our effort goes well beyond recruiting employers to partner or hiring projections and placement numbers. We go the distance with our employers to help them better engage with their staff, each other, and their community." - Danna Spencer, Associate Director of Client Services for Inclusion at Skills for Rhode Island's Future. Are you an employer seeking talent and curious about partnering with workABILITY? Join us in our mission to provide equal opportunities for all by contacting the #workABILITY team! Was it a coincidence? 🤔 Maybe. But when I launched the Disability and Accessibility Employee Resource Group (ERG) last June, it later sparked a significant increase in clients reaching out to me, sharing their stories about the challenges of having a disability and navigating the complexities of pursuing their next career opportunity. Interestingly, none of them were aware of my instrumental role in developing the first disability inclusion ERG at Hire Heroes USA or my personal story behind it. The ERG primarily caters to our employees with disabilities, yet it also serves as a vital support system for our clients. We continually assess our program and service delivery to ensure they effectively meet the diverse needs of everyone involved. ⚡ For those who have been following my journey, you know I'm resourceful, but tackling the intricacies of a disability while embarking on a new career journey requires more than just resources. Here's some encouragement – watch the full video by clicking here. ➡ PS. And a reminder: not all disabilities are service-connected, and not all disabilities are visible.

Putting Care and Consideration into People's Needs. If more companies like Venita sought for and then looked out for their employees with disabilities (visible and invisible) wouldn’t the world be a different place? Starting by changing their recruitment process, it was only success and change from here! What an inspiring article!
