Chief Operating Officer at Access Initiatives | Award Winning Speaker | Empowering People with Disabilities and Healthcare Inclusivity.
#Nurse educators, I urge you to refrain from isolating students who disclose their disabilities when measured against a specific set of technical benchmarks. While the transition from nursing academia to practical application is customary, it's essential to recognize the breadth of the nursing #profession. As #educators, our primary responsibility is to guide students toward successful board examinations. However, it remains the prerogative of the students to determine their trajectory within the nursing field. Moreover, it's crucial to acknowledge that individuals with #disabilities often possess valuable skills honed through their everyday experiences.

Around the country, thousands of people with disabilities and families rely on private duty nursing to live at home and stay financially stable. Private duty nursing is care provided by a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse to someone who has complex medical needs. A private duty nurse performs skilled care in a person's home that is typically provided in a hospital or nursing home. Children and adults with disabilities who need these services rely on private duty nurses in order to live at home in their communities. Otherwise, they may be forced into an institution or nursing home—away from their families—and often have a lower quality of life and social inclusion. Right now, 50 to 70% of private duty nursing shifts are going unfilled, causing additional pressure and stress for those who need care. Click the link below ⬇️ to learn more about private duty nursing, hear stories from people who need it most and ways you can help protect this invaluable support. https://bit.ly/3oTnegH

“Hope is not about proving anything. It’s about choosing to believe this one thing, that love is bigger than any grim, bleak shit anyone can throw at us.” - Anne Lamott On social media, I’ve often come across individuals who deny the existence of racism or try to shift blame onto those raising awareness about it. It’s disheartening to witness this recurring pattern, especially when we consider the challenges faced by those impacted by racism. Trauma on trauma. The reality of racism in healthcare was highlighted in a national survey, where a significant 44% of nurses acknowledged racism as part of their nursing school’s culture. Even worse, it often comes from their managers. And on an even higher level: our political leaders with anti-dei legislation. This push is in turn prompting corporations to reduce their dei offerings. #dei #blm #endracism #diversityinclusion #apic #apic2023 #allyship #ally #allyshipmatters #ana #nursesonlinkedin #nurseleaders #infectionprevention
#Nurses of color continue to experience racism and discrimination at work. According to the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing, nearly half of nurses agree there is "a lot" of racism in nursing. Delanor Manson is the first Black nurse to lead the Kentucky Nurses Association in 117 years, but her success is an exception. “I have to say that part of the reason we have a nursing shortage is that many nurses of color have said, ‘Enough. I'm not taking it anymore, and I'm out,’” Manson said. https://ow.ly/fZmt50P8Ma2

How do you start your advocacy journey? I am glad you asked… 1) Check out this week's NP student recording with Patrice Little, DNP, FNP-BC, and myself. 2). Find an issue you are passionate about. 3). Research the issue and get a greater understanding of how this issue impacts your family, individuals, and community members for your patients. 4). Identify potential allies who have similar interests in the issue that you’re passionate about. Connect with organizations that are already doing the work around this issue. Join nursing professional organizations and learn more about the advocacy process. 5). Develop strategies and an advocacy plan to increase awareness/visibility about the issue. Focusing on the messaging you’re trying to get across and who your target audience is. 6). I figure out your motives behind the advocacy goal. For example, is it really to help people and improve a cause or issue or just to get a name for yourself? You want to ensure your motives are pure before starting your advocacy journey. . . #advocacy #policychange #legislation #healthpolicy #nurses
