We are seeking a Vice President, Scientific Director to join us in our New York office on our growing BioScience Communications team! BioScience Communications is a division of Daniel J. Edelman, Inc., and a trusted partner to biopharma, medical device, and emerging science companies worldwide. The Vice President, Scientific Director will have the ability to learn and deploy a wide variety of medical communications skills to a single, but diversified, industry that is of fundamental importance to individuals, governments, and society at large. Furthermore, employees will hone their medical communication skills alongside colleagues who have deep expertise at the intersection of science and society.

The Vice President, Scientific Director will independently manage a large account or several small accounts, driving the program(s) strategically and tactically, including all aspects of program management (timeline planning, resource planning, budget development, and contingency planning). They will also be responsible for managing junior team members. They will be well organized, able to multi-task and prioritize, and possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, and expert program management skills.

Responsibilities

Client service:

  • Manage/coordinate all aspects of individual projects within a large account, and/or multiple small accounts
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of client's business goals, strategies, and needs, and, as a result, develop creative, relevant, strategic programs
  • Apply industry regulations and guidelines, as appropriate
  • Create strategic, thoughtful communications to multiple stakeholders (clients, team members, individual experts, third-party groups)
  • Be willing/able to travel to client meetings/events
  • Keep the full internal team/supervisor informed of all internal and potential client issues
  • Manage third-party vendor communications
  • Develop appropriate solutions to internal and client challenges; problem-solving skills are a critical part of the day-to-day responsibilities for this position
  • Contribute to content review, ensuring alignment to account strategy and project communication objectives for each project
  • Develop tactical recommendations to meet client goals
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of client's therapeutic area
  • Draft and edit documents with regard to content, tone, and style
  • Edit all agency- and client-generated documents to ensure they are in final format
  • Develop clear and concise communications (e.g. memos, plans, emails, etc.) both internal-facing and client-facing
  • Possess a broad understanding of industry guidelines and regulations
  • Actively participate in and sometimes lead client conference calls and meetings


Product capability and development:

  • Possess a thorough understanding of Bioscience capabilities over time, including services and practices (e.g., science narrative, expert engagement, and scientific and data visualization) to further develop client relationships and work streams


Financial planning and management:

  • Manage all financial aspects of assigned accounts, including serving as internal accounting system lead for assigned accounts
  • Track cost variations and keep team/manager abreast of changes
  • Identify and obtain resources to complete projects on time and on budget


Business development:

  • Participate effectively in internal and client brainstorms (articulate ideas, claim a share of voice appropriately)
  • Begin to demonstrate confidence and knowledge in presenting during new business pitches
  • Participate in the creation of new business proposals through research, brainstorms, and articulation of strategies and tactics


People development:

  • Manage junior BioScience team members and ensure their professional development and growth
  • Receive favorable 360-degree feedback
  • Provide appropriate feedback to all team members
  • Engage in team-building activities
  • Contribute to 360o performance appraisal process for peers and managers


Leadership:

  • Motivate team by demonstrating a commitment to timely delivery of high-quality work
  • Demonstrate dedication to the BioScience team (proactively communicate whereabouts, keep teammates appraised of project status, etc.)
  • Be open to constructive criticism and instructional conversations designed to help improve performance or team function
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors and pursuit of excellence in all endeavors
  • Demonstrate leadership behavior by motivating others and maintaining enthusiasm in the face of challenges and successes


Basic Qualifications

  • At least 8-10 years of relevant experience in Medical Communications and/or related fields
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an agency environment such as Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or PR
  • Strong demonstration of science writing as well as competency.


$95,000 - $155,000 a year

An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, travel requirements, revenue-based metrics, any contractual agreements, and business or organizational needs. The range listed is just one component of DJEH’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, a Paid Time Off policy, and region-specific benefits.
