Goodwill NYNJ ‘s Retail social enterprise operates nearly thirty stores, outlets, and donation centers across the region, consisting of New York Metro area, the Hudson Valley and Northern New Jersey. Goods donated by the community are sold in our businesses to help support our mission to empower individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment to gain independence through the power of work. The Vice President of Warehouse Operations is an exciting new role for Goodwill NYNJ and will build up Goodwill NYNJ’s logistics and warehousing capacity to optimize the inflow, outflow, and sale of donations across our businesses. The VP of Warehouse Operations will have direct oversight of two retail outlets, a warehouse and distribution center, as well as transportation, logistics and procurement functions for the entire retail division inclusive of all sites. The Vice President will also provide leadership and oversight for the planned growth of recycling initiatives and post-retail processing to meet the organization’s revenue and sustainability goals.

Business Growth & Expansion

  • Develop a strategic vision to grow Goodwill NYNJ post – retail business lines and partnerships. Post-Retail includes channels for donated goods that do not sell in stores, including our outlet and bulk purchase business and recycling.
  • Develop and execute opportunities to run a more efficient and sustainable warehouse, including enhanced equipment and procurement models.
  • Lead departments in the Goodwill NYNJ warehouse and distribution center in executing strategic revenue growth and continuous improvement. Reporting directly to this role will be the Director of Operations. The VP will have overall oversight of all associates responsible for the distribution of goods and supplies to retail sites and vendors.
  • Develop and adopt standard operating procedures (SOPs) for warehouse operations; coach and train staff in standards, measure staff and business performance, and regularly enhance SOPs in response to results, and ultimately proactively anticipate needs.

Transportation & Supply Chain Strategy

  • Lead development and oversight of transportation strategy to ensure consistent, on-time and cost-effective transportation model that serves the needs of all retail businesses to flow product and equipment among sites. Directly manage contract requirements, fleet requirements, performance, and relationship with Goodwill NYNJ’s transportation vendor(s).
  • Lead periodic review of transportation cost and routes, working with logistics vendor to recommend alternative options in vehicles and routes to improve efficiency
  • Develop and manage process for the reporting of donation inflow and outflow among stores, donation centers, and distribution centers, to ensure clear monthly reporting on the movement of goods among sites
  • Partner with store Regional Vice Presidents to map the movement of donations from donation centers to stores, with responsibility for the smooth implementation of this product flow with logistics and transportation partners.
  • Partner with Data Analytics department to define, develop and report on key performance indicators for supply chain efficiency, donations flow, and warehouse operations
  • Operate a warehouse distribution center that utilizes space and storage efficiently, with a clearly defined floor plan that is consistently monitored and reset to standards.
  • Implement process for daily inventory, signage and waste audits and corrective action of warehouse operations and safety by warehouse management.
  • Implement and maintain inventory tracking system to manage stock, plan replenishment, and identify variances in Retail supplies and high-value product, including purchased goods.
  • In partnership with Facilities department and other internal stakeholders, develop and execute business strategies to reduce waste, reuse product, and recycle unsold goods, implementing processes within the warehouse that keep us at the forefront of sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee the distribution of stored donations, corporate goods donations, and purchased goods to retail stores in partnership with the SVP of Retail.
  • Continually assess Retail’s operations framework, including the flow of goods, logistics routing, facility layouts, operational and technology efficiencies, and evaluate results against industry benchmarks. Propose integrated solutions to increase efficiency and value to customers.

Vendor Management & Compliance

  • Serve as executive owner of relationships with all vendors used for warehouse operations and supplies, constantly working towards improved service and cost savings. Partner with Goodwill NYNJ administration to establish and adhere to standards for vendor management.
  • Partner with Director of Health and Safety regarding compliance with all safety and security policies and procedures in the warehouse and develop and deploy new ones as may be mutually determined through such partnership
  • Execute warehouse special projects and other duties as assigned.

Scope of Responsibility & Positions Supervised: Where applicable describes level of authority, decision making discretion, consequences of actions, supervisory and fiscal responsibility. Provide metrics where possible. Level of supervision received.

Qualifications: Describe the minimum educational and experience requirements/preferences.

The following qualifications are required:

  • Experience managing large-scale recycling partnerships and/or facilities preferred.
  • Operations management, supply chain, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of direct experience managing a multi-unit warehouse and warehouse staff.
  • Minimum five years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Experience in managing budgets and developing fiscal projections.
  • Experience in operational data analysis and supply chain metrics.
  • Inventory management experience.
  • Logistics and transportation management experience.

Skills Required: Describe the minimum skills required or preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to establish, apply, and evaluate operating standards in an organization.
  • Results-driven leader with strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of financial and operational metrics
  • Strong proficiency in Excel with an ability to analyze operational data to forecast financial performance.
  • Experience in business process reengineering, preferably in the domains of logistics or operations and/or warehouse management.
  • Ability to manage teams through change, identify and test innovative approaches, and engage staff in improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrable organizational, professional, problem solving, and customer service skills, and ability to facilitate collaboration across multiple teams.
  • Ability to think strategically and deliver outcomes with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Goodwill, and sensitivity to working with individuals of multiple abilities and from diverse backgrounds.
