$12.00 per hour up to 15 hours per week (Max 26 hours per week)
Position Summary:
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI sessions are regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for all students enrolled in a targeted course. The sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills.
SI sessions are conducted by a student leader who has successfully completed the course, attends the course, and works with the professor to design collaborative learning sessions for the students to attend on a voluntary basis. SI leaders support classroom instruction in every way. Likewise, the SI program is offered only in classes where the faculty member understands and supports Supplemental Instruction.
Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs.

- Ascertain course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with the course professor.
- Actively recruit participants for SI sessions.
- Conduct (3) 50-minute weekly sessions for each of your assigned sections throughout the term.
- Be prepared and be on time for each SI session.
- Be familiar with campus resources available to students.
- Plan SI sessions using a wide variety of the interactive learning strategies (without re-teaching, lecturing, or completing students’ assignments for them).
- Prepare handouts, informal quizzes, and other learning aids for SI sessions.
- Maintain a professional attitude at all times.
- Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. *)
- Must have completed at least one semester of full-time attendance at JSU and have a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
- Must have earned an A or B in all courses you wish to tutor.
- Have a faculty recommendation letter.
- Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU.
- All international students must be in a valid immigration status.
- Due to Visa requirements international students must be enrolled as a full-time JSU student and possess each of the following:
- Passport from their respective country.
- F-1 Student Visa or J-1 Exchange Student Visa.
- U.S. Customs Form I-94.
- Official photo identification.
- Official Social Security Card imprinted with “Valid for Work Only” or similar statement
- Cover Letter
- Resume
- Unofficial Transcript
