You will join the team at the Council Bluffs Resident Construction Office that will be administering projects to improve the bridges and roadways in SW Iowa which will include the Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvements through 2024.
Role
As the Transportation Engineer Associate assisting the Resident Construction Engineer, you will contribute to DOT’s mission by serving a role on the construction administration team working on large, complex highway construction projects and overseeing multiple project contracts. Role
As the Transportation Engineer Associate assisting the Resident Construction Engineer, you will contribute to DOT’s mission by serving a role on the construction administration team working on large, complex highway construction projects and overseeing multiple project contracts. This role will involve:
- Performing engineering support under the direction of the Resident Construction Engineer to qualify to sit for the Professional Engineer examination
- Assisting the Resident Construction Engineer with contract administration
- Ensuring contractor compliance with plans, specifications, and other contract requirements through inspection duties
- Documenting construction progress and material used to authorize contractor payment
- Sampling and testing of materials
- Evaluating traffic control and staging needed to perform the work
- Performing audits and preparing as-built records upon completion of construction
- Communicating with Iowa DOT staff, contractors, utility companies, and the public
- Managing co-workers as part of a project inspection team
- Assisting design efforts by collecting field data and providing input to be used in plan preparation

- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
- Possession of a verification of graduation with major course work in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
Additional Qualification Requirements
Applicants hired with verification of graduation will be required to graduate with a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university within 10 months of hire.
Required
Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain one or more of the following certificates, licenses, or endorsements:
- Certification as an engineer intern by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board
- Licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board is required within 9 years for continued employment; temporary training assignments will terminate within six months following a second attempt to obtain a professional engineer license or nine years from date of hire.
