Job Title: Shelter Translator

Job Overview: As a Shelter Translator working in New York City (NYC) homeless shelters, you play a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between shelter staff and residents who may come from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Your primary responsibility is to bridge language gaps, ensuring that residents receive the support, information, and services they need to navigate the shelter system and access essential resources.

Pay - $31.00 to $38.00 per hour

Key Responsibilities

  • Language Interpretation:
    • Provide accurate and timely verbal interpretation services for residents and shelter staff during various interactions, including intake interviews, case management sessions, medical appointments, and workshops.
    • Interpret written materials, such as notices, forms, and informational pamphlets, to help residents understand and comply with shelter policies and procedures.
  • Cultural Competence:
    • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness, recognizing and respecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of shelter residents.
    • Assist in cultural mediation, helping to bridge communication gaps that may arise due to cultural differences.
  • Client Advocacy:
    • Advocate for the needs and concerns of residents by effectively communicating their requests, questions, and feedback to shelter staff.
    • Collaborate with shelter staff to ensure that services and support are accessible and culturally responsive.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate records of interpreted conversations, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism.
    • Report any critical information or concerns promptly to relevant shelter personnel.
  • Training and Orientation:
    • Conduct language and cultural orientation sessions for shelter staff to enhance their understanding of the diverse population they serve.
    • Assist in the development and delivery of training programs focused on cultural competency and effective communication.
  • Community Resources:
    • Stay informed about available community resources, social services, and legal rights that may benefit shelter residents.
    • Collaborate with external organizations and agencies to connect residents with additional support services.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Be prepared to assist during emergency situations, providing vital language support for residents and staff.
Qualifications

  • Fluency in English and at least one other language commonly spoken by shelter residents.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in both languages.
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity to the needs of diverse populations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of the NYC shelter system and understanding of homelessness issues is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
