Summary

The incumbent functions as the Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) under the direct leadership of the identified Lead SPC and mental health leadership. This position will be located in Des Moines and will serve the CBOCs (Community Based Outreach Clinics). This position will provide local oversight for an interdisciplinary team of clinicians focused on decreasing suicide for the veterans treated at the VA CIHCS.

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Function as a coordinator of care for veterans at high risk for suicide.
  • Identify and track high-risk patients and monitor treatment to ensure that needed services are received.
  • Complete consults from the Veteran's Crisis Line by arranging follow-up mental health assessments, treatment, health and safety checks in the home, and if needed follow-up hospitalization and/or outpatient care.
  • Play an active role in the RCA (Root Cause Analysis) Suicide Team by performing individual case reviews, assisting with preparation of yearly aggregate summaries, and facilitating the implementation of system improvement and policies/procedural changes recommended by the RCA team.
  • Provide training to clinical staff on the development of veteran safety plans to prevent at risk behaviors.
  • Provide training to clinical and non-clinical staff in the Medical Center, CBOCs and community about risk factors, warning signs, treatment options and resources for patients identified to be at risk for suicide.
  • Engage the community in outreach during and outside business hours which includes weekends.
  • Establish an ongoing Gatekeeper Training program with non-clinical frontline staff to assure that staff is alert to patients who are at risk for suicide and are aware of options for patients whom they may encounter in crisis situations.
  • Promote the use of evidence-based interventions and strategies for suicide prevention in the medical center.
  • Ensure that all veterans at risk have a 24 hour resource number to contact and ways to receive assistance when needed.
  • Develop and distribute outreach materials to include brochures, fact sheets, web content, and other targeted information which highlights suicide prevention, warning signs and risk factors.
  • Develop and implement ongoing plans for providers, veterans, families and members of the community on risk factors and warning signs for suicide and treatment options.
  • Develop criteria for facility wide identification of medical record flag system for patients who are at risk for suicide, oversee implementation of monitoring system for these identified patients and monitoring of compliance with treatment plan.
  • Prepare and maintain administrative records, multiple databases, and reports in accordance with VACO and local guidelines.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

The basic requirements for employment as a VHA social worker are prescribed by statute in 38 U.S.C. 7402(b)(9), as amended by section 205 of Public Law 106-419, enacted November 1, 2000. To qualify for appointment as a social worker in VHA, all applicants must meet the following:

  • Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
  • Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level

Grade Determinations:

Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12

  • Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
  • Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. (Applicants must meet the requirements for providing supervision in the state where they are licensed at the advanced practice level and should list these qualifications within the assessment narrative and their resume.)
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (document with written demonstration of KSAs must be included with application, see required documents section)
    • Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
    • Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
    • Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
    • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
    • Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
