Senior R&D Chemist

Job Description

Major Function:

The Senior R&D Chemist’s main responsibilities are to develop new and novel products for the Company and to support efforts required to bring the new products or opportunities to as successful conclusion for the company. In addition, their role is to provide technical expert support to Sales & Marketing, EHS, Quality and Production.

Major Duties:

  • Lead or take active role in problem solving of customer issues using appropriate methodology.
  • Own multiple and varied projects with little to no direction
  • Show a deep understanding of formulation approaches in various areas of product portfolios, such as, emulsions, dispersions, suspensions, coatings.
  • Work with outside manufacturers when necessary to coordinate prototypes and samples.
  • Develops new approaches for the delivery of the projects
  • Stays abreast of developments in the scientific field and continue to demonstrate continuous performance improvement.
  • Take leadership role for method validation, protocol writing and other technical reporting as required.
  • Develop novel products to support the growth of the company and work with transitions across departments for commercial launch.
  • Assist in training employees (new hire and refresher); communicating with management to identify areas for improvement.
  • Assist in efforts to manage Vendor/Supplier System: reviewing, approving, documenting proposed and existing suppliers (as needed).
  • Assist in efforts to manage Approved Material System: review, approve, and document new materials to be used onsite for quality and conformance to internal requirements; collect, maintain and update material documents and certifications (as needed).
  • Complete customer requests for documentation, samples, and new product development (as needed).
  • Perform batch validation testing, corrections, and documentation (COA, etc.) in support of new product or business opportunities.
  • Maintain laboratory records following AMSi retention policies or practices;
  • Coordinate sampling and testing with outside laboratories (as needed) as they pertain to R&D functions;
  • Maintain quality/lab equipment calibrations and documentation of same;
  • General upkeep and supply of the assigned lab and work area (cleanliness, inventory of materials needed, resupply materials as necessary, etc.);
  • Other similar tasks as assigned by management.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must demonstrate good attention to detail and thoroughness.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and communicate complex technical information for projects and training.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment drug test.
  • Familiar with company concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of tasks utilizing individual initiative.
  • Must be able to work with subordinates, peers and superiors in all departments and outside the company.
  • Follow company’s food safety, chemical safety, sexual harassment, discrimination and general employee policies.
  • Occasionally perform tasks not described in this position description in order to meet the needs of the company or department.
  • All staff must report food safety and quality problems to personnel that can initiate action.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors in science or engineering (preferably chemistry) or 5+ years in a similar role for chemical manufacturer
  • Familiarity with chemical handling and instrumental techniques used in development of new or improving existing product
