As the Senior Product Designer- Kids’, you will combine technical product knowledge, active product use, experience, market knowledge and input from other team members to create original and innovative designs. Your sensitivity to aesthetics will run a spectrum from beautiful, simple basics to performance product for highly specific end use.

Through market travel and research, product testing, exposure and collaboration to field testers and ambassadors, you will maintain constant exposure to innovations, trends and design evolution within the industry. Ultimately you will create designs that embrace the Company’s core design philosophy which is to create product that is thoughtful, of the highest quality, functional and with all fabrication done in the most environmentally friendly manner. While you will contribute to the overall development of the Company’s design concepts for a given season, you will also have specific ownership of the Kids’ product line, which may vary from time to time. In this role, you will also share industry experiences with other co-workers through preliminary designs, mentoring and professional skill building. The focus will be primarily on Kids’ and Baby Technical and Lifestyle Outerwear and sportswear apparel – including but not limited to – Insulation, Hardshell, Windshell and Softshell classifications, as well as synthetic and natural sportswear.

As our ideal candidate, you have in depth knowledge of the kids’ market, kids’ and baby safety standards and considerations, and garment functionality specifically as it relates to kids’ and baby needs. You are also highly skilled in outerwear, snow apparel and in all relevant classifications. You will also have experience with Sport focused product - Climbing, Snow and Active High Output sport familiarity highly encouraged.

What you'll Do:


  • Be a Category/Classification Leader responsible for the creation of relevant, innovative, seasonal design concepts for a specific category – including concept, storytelling and marketing collaboration.
  • Play a lead role in ensuring the cross-pollination of design concepts, trend + visual inspiration research & presentations, and ideate with other designers and teams.
  • In collaboration and cooperation with Product Line Managers and Design Director, create seasonal line plans and strategic initiatives.
  • Provide and Receive Design Feedback with a Strategic mindset, prioritizing needs of your category’s community & business .
  • Contribute to building and implementation of design language & branding tools.
  • Co-lead Style Material Development and Strategy with Material Developer, Design Lead, Design Director and Product Line Managers to create and source categorically appropriate and innovative fabric constructions.
  • Collaborate with the appropriate Product Line Manager, Product Developer, Pattern Maker and factory to engineer products that achieve design concepts while meeting target margin goals.
  • Collaborate with ambassadors and field-testing team to create highly functional and field-tested product.
  • Communicate and present concepts and design information in a concise and professional manner whether in a verbal, written or visual context.
  • Create mockups, basic garments and iterate construction ideas in on-site product creation facility and/or collaborate with onsite Patternmakers and Technicians to do so effectively.
  • Collaborate with Color, Graphic and Textile Design on Individual Style & Key Category Community Needs .
  • Assume a leadership role in championing designs through 2D design review. Thereafter, in partnership with Product Developers, develop fabrics, trims and manufacturing strategies for the products of responsibility.
  • Provide product information through detailed drawings, mockups and thorough specifications to Pattern Makers and Product Developers so that prototypes and BOMs can be created in a timely manner.
  • Attend and Participate in Product Fittings and Attend Fittings of Designers Working on Your Area of Focus .
  • Keep Design Director informed on material developments, product concept and storytelling, line plan development and marketing collaboration specific to allocated categories .
  • Mentorship of more junior designers.
  • Participate in Company-sponsored design trips to various locations around the world to spark creativity and innovation in all design concepts.

Experience You Bring:


  • College Degree in Apparel or Industrial Design - or - College Degree with 2+ additional years relevant design experience preferred.
  • 5-7+ years design experience in the outdoor industry or equivalent required.
  • Experience working on kids’ and baby product required.
  • Design and Construction experience with Waterproof, 3L, Hardshell Materials and general understanding of seam construction and adhesives required.
  • Experience with Synthetic and Down Insulation construction and materials required.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers with demonstrated experience in the use of such programs as: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Word, Excel, Outlook and WebPLM.
  • Highly developed drawing skills required.
  • Expertise in garment construction required.
  • Knowledge of patterns and textiles required.
  • Basic sewing and construction skills highly encouraged.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patternmakers and technicians required.
  • Experience in 3D software & design a plus.
  • Passion for protecting our natural world, and being an environmental activist highly encouraged.


Pay range: $100,000-150,000 USD Annual

Hiring range: $115,000-$135,000 USD Annual

At Patagonia, pay ranges are assigned to a job based on the location specific market median of similar jobs according to 3rd party salary benchmark surveys. Individual pay within that range can vary for several reasons including skills/capabilities, experience, and available budget.
