Role/ Department: Instructional Designer/Talent Management

As part of a highly visible team responsible for developing enterprise programming that drives manager and executive development, the Instructional Designer for Management and Leadership (M&L) Development will play a key role in ensuring our managers and leaders are developed with the capabilities needed to lead our organization to achieve our One Northern Trust strategy.

Ideal candidates will be proven consultative leaders with the strategic ability to quickly recognize and act on the M&L learning and development needs of the organization. They exhibit the skillset required to develop best-in-class tools, job aids, instructor-led and virtually-delivered courses and related experiential learning. The role also requires strong interpersonal skills to lead through influence and collaboration. This role will report to the Head of Learning Design & Governance.

The Key Responsibilities Of The Role Include

  • Strategy: Contribute to the learning and development strategy for new people managers through senior executives. Expected to create executive-ready decks and tools to convey our strategy and influence our key stakeholders.
  • Consulting: Bringing your M&L content expertise and latest research, effectively consult with senior leadership stakeholders to understand the business requirements, get to the root of the learning need(s), and ensure the resulting programming delivers expected outcomes.
  • Learning design and development: Leveraging deep experience in learning design and development techniques, create instructionally sound learning solutions aligned to audience(s) and outcome(s). Design and development post-class reinforcement interventions to drive adoption of new behaviors on the job. Collaboratively create and implement of a portfolio of M&L development programming that yields the greatest benefit to Northern Trust.
  • Driving innovation in learning design: Set the bar for innovative learning design ensuring internally designed and purchased solutions are relevant, fresh, and engaging across a range of mediums including digital learning (purchased), VILT and ILT (internally designed). Offer creative ideas on marketing strategy to build excitement around M&L programming.
  • Project Management: Manage learning project plans through an Agile-like version of the ADDIE life cycle. Expected to take initiative to conceptualize and lead experimental projects in consultation with leaders/experts. Follow guidance on governance to build or buy solutions, prepare workplans, track issues to resolution, forecast and determine program costs, and manage related external vendors.
  • Measurement: Continually assess programs against expectations and recommend/implement changes that drive efficiencies and effectiveness. Utilize techniques to measure on-the-job behavior improvement resulting from M&L learning and development programming.

Skills/Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in an educational, corporate training, or professional services environment, creating strategies and developing management, leadership, and executive level training solutions
  • Experience designing development programs and experiences that generate engagement in facilitated (virtual and in-person classroom environments) and self-paced learning
  • Consulting with internal clients to identify needs and translate them into solutions
  • Vendor sourcing and vendor management
  • Program design and development skills (assessment strategies, instructional design, adult learning approaches, audience analysis, outcome measurement, M&L best practices, etc.)
  • PowerPoint presentation construction
  • Facilitator / participant guides and job aids / performance support tools creation
  • Communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Work equally effectively as a team member and as an independent L&D Consultant to the most senior levels of the organization
  • Consulting, influence, conflict management, and negotiation skills
  • Program and project management skills
  • Process management and governance
  • Innovative problem-solving and commitment to continuous improvement
  • Ability to form strong relationships across all stakeholders
  • Cutting edge industry knowledge of best practices in learning asset design and outcome measurement
  • Relentless attention to detail, high standards, and able to produce high quality deliverables

  • Experience developing elearning in Articulate 360
