R&D Chemist II

Job Description

Uses knowledge and experience to oversee, and participate in formulating and generation of new products, using a strong chemistry background to support a fast-paced energetics manufacturing company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Formulation – Assist in creating, following, and scaling up chemical formulations processes for novel energetic material. Assist in trouble shooting product characteristics results in material.
  • Synthesis – Work on various projects by following known synthesis mechanism to create material. Ability to trouble shoot issues that arise in process. Identify processes and equipment needed to scale up.
  • Working with HPLC, PSA, DSC, TGA, wet chemistry equipment and other lab equipment to characterize material.
  • General Engineering - Provide product designs and perform or assist in failure analysis, perform and/or assist in hazards analysis, provide any additional engineering support to the operations group as necessary.
  • Apply principles of chemistry and engineering to help design new equipment and testing of energetic materials.
  • Support evaluating processes in the plant and implementing improvements based on operator input, new/improved equipment, design changes, etc. with the goals of safety, quality, and reduced cost/waste.
  • Research & evaluate new or improved equipment, arrange for the specification/design and purchase of new equipment, and oversee the installation and start-up of new equipment.
  • Be involved in the design of new explosive products from proof of concept, prototypes, testing, pilot scale, and scale-up to manufacturing. This includes product design, testing, and verification and validation.
  • Manage customer programs and internal projects to ensure all requirements such as schedule, budget, and resources are met.
  • Participate in the quoting process by reviewing customer requirements; assisting in a bid/no-bid decision; and providing tooling/equipment costs, raw materials costs, packaging, cycle times, and labor hours
  • Help manage customer programs to ensure all customer requirements are met as either a principal on the project or in support of a larger team. This may be in conjunction with any other aspect of the job.

Qualifications / Skills

  • Ability to operate lab equipment such as HPLC, experience with DSC, TGA, a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Experience with Microsoft Project is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • An understanding of machinery, tooling, electro-mechanical systems a plus.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both as an individual and within a team, think outside of the box, maintain schedule and budget, but do so with strict adherence to safety and operating regulations.
  • Ideal candidate must possess strong analytical skills and a desire to take a hands-on approach to solving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science in Engineering, or Chemistry 3 Years Work experience in similar job
