What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a motivated Product Design Engineer who will apply technical judgment based upon engineering principles in the design and development of innovative products for Sandia National Laboratories. The selected candidate will utilize creativity to formulate design concepts that meet the form, fit, and functional requirements for new product concepts. You will use Computer Aided Design (CAD) and/or Newforma software to mathematically represent the physical attributes of the product and determine the physical characteristics of the product to be manufactured including geometric form, interface features, manufacturing specifications, processes, and assembly instructions. In addition, you will use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and design trade studies as inherent activities of product development to ensure the design feasibility from a manufacturing and product maintenance perspective. This job will require for you to communicate the design options and recommended approach to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Initiates, designs, develops, executes, and evaluates new processes, products, or systems for implementing and integrating engineering solutions.
  • Establishes and reviews design methods and procedures and prepares design specifications, analyses, and recommendations for presentation and approval.
  • Uses CAD application software to develop electrical or mechanical design concepts.
  • Evaluates design options using optimization techniques.
  • P rovides the necessary documentation to successfully deploy the product in the field.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$70,200 - $157,500

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. A higher-level degree (MS, PhD) in relevant discipline may also be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s degree. Equivalent experience in lieu of degree must be directly related experience that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Experience with the following:
  • Construction project information software such as Newforma to support Laboratory design projects.
  • Developing and maintaining schedules for resource management using tools such as Primavera P6, MS SharePoint, Power BI, Dashboards, etc.
  • Designing, planning, and executing design, and development projects.
  • Implementing policies affecting research, design, and development activities, projects, or initiatives.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level Security Clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in:
  • Information management lifecycle, including identification of information needs; acquisition and creation of information; analysis and interpretation of information; organization, storage, and preservation of information; information access, security, and dissemination; and information use and collaboration.
  • Cross partnering skills, organizational, project management techniques and principles, strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Coordinating cross-functional partnerships with a variety of teams, including engineering, information technology, program management, data governance, configuration management, quality assurance, and communications staff.
  • Information management and quality assurance for portfolio management and sponsor interactions such as proposal development, quarterly reporting, Training curriculum delivery, training plans, training reports, etc.Developing competencies and implement systems to support new activities in laboratory design, sponsor interactions, and scheduling that require information management.

About Our Team

The 06825 Department is multidisciplinary and focuses on advancing international threat reduction goals by promoting safe, secure and responsible use of dangerous biological and chemical agents around the globe. The IBCTR program provides specific technical advice to the US Government on issues related to counter-chembioterrorism, the Biological Weapons Convention, the Chemical Weapons Convention, and has projects in the following areas: security system analysis, design and implementation; agent risk prioritization; outbreak control and management; information control and management; training in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety, security, risk awareness, disease surveillance and diagnostics, and related topics; and global, regional, and country-specific analysis and assessments. These projects involve both US interests as well as those of various foreign countries and international organizations.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements For MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
