Processing Internship Position

The Resource Assistants Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers.

Position Description

The RA will be assisting the Chugach National Forest Heritage Program Manager on a variety of tasks- artifact analysis and cataloging, archaeological records management, Forest Service project analysis, setting up a Chugach National Forest Heritage website, conducting fieldwork, researching the use of predictive models and lidar in Forest Service Heritage Programs. I will tailor their work to match what strengths they bring and to address any areas of interest they have regarding archaeology. They will also get out and meet district Heritage staff in the field if that is their interest. I envision a flexible work list due to the variety of Heritage program needs we have at this time.

Responsibilities

  • The RA will assist the Heritage Program Manager in organizing a variety of project and archaeological site records so that the Heritage staff can make better use of those files. Some scanning to get the documents into an electronic format will likely be part of the task.
  • The RA will assist the Heritage Program Manager in the management of an artifact collection by updating collection records, analyzing artifacts, and organizing artifact collection.
  • The RA will assist the Heritage Program Manager in conducting fieldwork- inventory and recording archaeological sites if they wish.
  • The RA will assist the Heritage Program Manager in the development of a predictive model for the Forest so that fieldwork can be conducted more efficiently.
  • If they wish, the RA can attend planning and project meetings to see how the process is done.

Qualifications

Major studies relevant to this position: History, Archaeology, GIS, Records Management, Anthropology.
