Job Title: Principal (K-2nd Grade)

Reports to: Chief Academic Officer

Job Description: The Principal in close partnership with the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) is responsible for the day-to-day management of teaching, learning, and maintaining an overall school culture and climate in line with the school’s mission and vision. The will ensure the academic and social-emotional success of students by providing direct supervision of classroom teachers, school Deans, Family and Community Engagement, as well as coordinating assessments, and ensuring timely reporting of statutory data requirements to the NJDOE.

Job Responsibilities

The Principal is responsible for:

School Culture; The Principal ensures the achievement of a joyous and rigorous school environment that represents the school's tenets and values: love fuels all things. The Principal ensures discipline targets are reached and school-wide procedures are effectively implemented across the school. The Principal defines and builds a transformative school culture consistent with Philip’s Academy’s core values and mission. With the leadership team, the Principal designs and implements programs and initiatives; devizes school-wide rituals that promote the culture and sustain the school’s values. Organize school events and assemblies. The Principal develops positive relationships with all stakeholders, including staff, students, families, and community members/organizations.

The Principal ensures the appropriate placement of applicants and actively participates in explaining the curriculum, instructional practices, and overall educational system to staff, parents, and students including coordinating and monitoring the communication regarding individual academic concerns with parents as appropriate: progress reports and report card distribution with teaching staff.

Instructional Leadership; Provide instructional leadership for the school, including maintaining school-wide focus on high standards of student achievement; ensuring teaching state standards; managing process for analyzing data to increase student achievement; and supporting all teachers and staff members in their professional development including but not limited to onboarding, PLCs, and coaching plans. Observe, coach, and evaluate teachers and staff on a consistent basis; Coach Grade Level Leads and Mentor Teachers and serve as an expert resource to teachers on issues of school culture, classroom management, discipline, and relationship with students and families.

The Principal plans and oversees the RTI process and manages and/or teaches intervention plans school-wide; supports decision making around curricular choices; reviews graded assessments and assists in making grading schedules; helps plan and coordinates mission-aligned, academically driven field trips.

Student Management; The Principal works with the Chief School Administrator and related staff to define behavior management tools, including overseeing staff training in behavior management policies, techniques, and strategies, and ensuring the consistent deployment of such tools school-wide and collaboration with families. The Principal ensures that discipline policies are implemented across classrooms and grades. The Principal works with appropriate staff to develop school-wide programs and create a school-wide identity among the students.

Human Resources; Support the school’s human resource functions including interviewing new teachers and staff, holding regular performance reviews and developing the professional development plans as needed.

Financial and Administration; Help develop the annual budget, and authorize expenses in keeping with the budget.

Board Relations; Present data from school performance at board meetings as needed.

Operations & Regulatory Compliance; Oversee the day-to-day school operations. Implement school policies. Manage school logistics in collaboration with the operations team; ensure that the academic and instructional program is supported with appropriate purchases and services.

Staff and reporting relationships; The Principal reports to the Chief Academic Officer and directly supervises the second through fourth-grade academic staff and performs other duties as assigned by the CAO.

Candidates Must Have

At least three years of successful experience teaching in an urban school environment; Grade level leader, department chair, or instructional leadership experience.

A clear record of elevating student achievement in an urban classroom, with a strong understanding of pedagogy that drives results.

A relentless work ethic and commitment to achieving the school's mission.

Excellent strategic planning, leadership, management, and communication skills, with a proven ability to lead instructional and non-instructional staff.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent skills in organization and follow-through.

Education

Master’s degree

Certification

Principal, Supervisor, or School Administrator certification.
