The Organization

Mi Familia Vota (MFV) is the Latino led organization with the largest field operation in the Latino community that uses a holistic approach to building political power. We are located in 8 strategic states AZ, CA, CO, GA, FL, NV, TX, & NC and engage our community around the most prevalent issues to ensure the construction of a healthy democracy and the advancement of a national Latino progressive agenda. MFV utilizes a variety of strategies to reach our community including citizenship, door to door voter education, registration and mobilization, issue organizing as well as leadership development, advocacy, accountability campaigns and litigation.

Mi Familia Vota is a 501(c)(4) organization and Mi Familia en Acción is a 501(c)(3) organization.

The Role

Reporting to the CEO, you will have the opportunity to lead and shape Mi Familia Vota's National communication and media efforts, contributing significantly to the organization's mission of building Latino political power and civic engagement. This role will require interaction with both English and Spanish language media outlets.

  1. Team Leadership
  • Supervise and manage Mi Familia Vota communications staff and consultants dedicated to national-level political campaigns.
  • Direct communications staff responsible for in-state communications in priority congressional districts and state-wide or national elections.
  • Oversee planning, budgeting, and project management within the department and coordinate with other organizational departments and field teams.
  1. Strategic Communications Leadership:
  • Drive the development and execution of comprehensive communication strategies for Mi Familia Vota’s programs.
  1. Media Strategy and Advocacy:
  • Direct, develop, and execute proactive and rapid response communications efforts to shape public discourse and achieve success in Mi Familia Vota’s political campaigns at the national and/or state levels.
  • Engage with partners, opinion-makers, and Congress to win the public debate.
  • Elevate the national and state-level media profile of Mi Familia Vota through effective communication strategies.
  • Collaborate with the data team to conduct analytical data reviews of ongoing campaigns, utilizing polling data and insights to inform strategies.
  1. Primary Press Contact:
  • Serve as the primary press contact at the national level for political issues and campaigns, including engagement with print and electronic national media, national columnists, news magazines, Capitol Hill media, and commentators.
  1. Financial Oversight:
  • Manage and oversee the communications budget and program, encompassing earned media, advertising, digital activations, member political communications, research, data, and general communications.
  • Prepare and monitor budgets for political communications, including campaign budgets.
  1. Stakeholder Representation:
  • Represent Mi Familia Vota with a high level of professionalism in interactions with external stakeholders, including Mi Familia Vota officers, division leadership, international senior staff, project and program managers, field and organization directors, local union officers and staff, news media, politicians, government officials, elites, partners, allies, vendors, consultants, pollsters, freelancers, video and multimedia producers, and advertising agencies.
  1. Additional Duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the work of the department and the organization's mission.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in communications or related work, including at least 5 years managing communications and/or political strategy, planning, and program development (preferred)
  • Experience working in fast paced, collaborative and in a digitally native environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and set and meet deadlines and ensure that the staff team does the same.
  • Requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Proven track record developing and implementing communications and/or political strategy on a wide range of campaigns, including organizing, political, electoral, and legislative.
  • Experience managing community partner relationships, including collaborating on large scale campaigns and events.
  • Proficiency in pitching senior team members for local and national television as relevant to campaigns, strategies, and overall organization goals.
  • Thorough and extensive knowledge of media relations strategies, including relationships with key political reporters.
  • Ability to work with International and local union elected leaders and senior staff in complex and sometimes politically sensitive situations.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital and social media. Knowledge of advertising techniques and familiarity with all aspects of literature, audio-visual, and online production process required.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to continuously develop knowledge and skills related to use of rapidly changing technology.
  • Proficient in the use of managing files in cloud-based systems like Google Suite, Slack, or Trello.
  • Experience in multilingual communications is a plus.
