Position Title: Financial Aid Counselor

Department: Enrollment Management

Reports To: Director of Financial Aid

Work Hours: 35 hours

Status: Full-time; 12-Month Staff

FSLA Classification: Exempt, STAFF-EXEMPT

Summary

Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid, this position may involve interaction and collaboration with student accounts, admissions, students, alumni, faculty, and other college constituents. The Counselor must be professional, have strong communication and problem-solving skills, and provide processing outputs that are timely and accurate. The Counselor will work collaboratively within a unit devoted to superior student service, financial literacy, and the mission of the College.

The Counselor is also responsible for awarding all aspects of federal, state, and institutional financial aid and maintaining current knowledge of all Title IV regulations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare financial aid offers for certain populations of students, resolve eligibility discrepancies; perform tax verification, process loans.
  • Counsel students, parents, and administrators regarding financial aid, payment plans, bills, and financing alternatives.
  • To assume oversight responsibility for specified funding programs such as Graduate Assistantships and Endowed scholarships.
  • Make presentations to general public about financial aid.
  • Utilize PowerFAIDS for packaging and access other online federal/state agencies for loan certification and precertification.
  • Utilize FAA access, COD and the NSLDS to review and update student information.
  • Review documentation for integrity and determine institutional, state, and federal aid eligibility.
  • Implement, understand, and interpret federal, state, and institutional guidelines, and procedures to assist students in obtaining financial aid.
  • Act as liaison to Specific Programs at the University and externally.

  • Knowledge of PA State Grant and other special programs
  • Proficiency with Powerfaids/Jenzabar/salesforce.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and Excel.
  • Ability to educate students and families on their financial and registration records inquiries.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development as necessary.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-2 year’s experience in student financial aid at a college level
  • Must possess excellent written/verbal communication skills as well as excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Maintain a pleasant and professional manner, good interpersonal skills, to promote a professional and friendly atmosphere
  • Possess excellent computer skills
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Must be able to maintain a confidential manner due to contact with sensitive information.
  • Experience working with complex regulations and policies
  • Must be in good standing in all Federal Title IV programs
  • Experience with Powerfaids, Jenzabar and salesforce

  • Routinely: Required to remain seated in a normal position for long periods of time
  • Occasionally: Required to stand for long periods of time

  • Regularly: Required to talk and hear
  • Regularly: Close vision (clear vision at 2inches or less)
  • Occasionally: Depth perception and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships
  • Regularly: Adjustable focus
  • Occasionally: Ability to distinguish colors
  • Regularly: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing documents, data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; moderate reading.
  • Routinely: Able to see and read computer screens
  • Regularly: Able to read fine print and/or normal size print
