Environmental Scientist II / Geoscientist II

Description

The Environmental Scientist II / Geoscientist II (S2) position has the primary responsibilities of completing tasks in the field as well as analyzing data and assisting in the preparation of reports.

  • Collect field samples of water, soil or other media in accordance with standard industry practice or according to Moody standard operating procedures.
  • Documentation of field conditions of media such as soil, groundwater, surface water, bedrock, air quality (gases), stream substrate and biological media.
  • With supervisory assistance, conducts minimal direction of Moody subcontractors and/or other contractors of Moody clients.
  • Assemble, operate and maintain field instruments and equipment.
  • Analyze data
  • Assist in the preparation of report figures and graphs.
  • Prepare draft reports and summaries for review by project manager.
  • Prepare notes, sketches and site maps.
  • May assist supervisors with preparation of reports.
  • Complete data entry and quality assurance/quality control tasks with large quantities of data produced from field activities.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Works directly with various senior staff, according to assignment. An S2 may serve as the lead when working as a team with other S1 and S2 staff. In some circumstances, the S2 may interact or meet with the client. However, such interactions must be clearly communicated and include project management in any decision-making prior to implementation.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • With a master’s degree, minimum of 1 year of experience (or comparable)
  • With a bachelor’s degree, minimum of 2 years of experience (or comparable)
  • Strongly encouraged to pursue obtaining applicable licensing, certifications, and accreditations.
  • Staff with a geology degree are strongly encouraged to pursue obtaining a P.G. license and applicable licensing, certifications and accreditations.

  • Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
  • Dependable (regular attendance necessary).
  • Is an active listener (including understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem solving and decision making).

Scheduling

  • Full time weekly schedule with minimum average of 30+ hours per week and overtime as required. A typical work week is 40 hours.
  • Schedules are flexible; however, our core office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Employees are expected to be available via phone and/or in person if necessary, during these hours.
  • Weekend and evening hours are required periodically. Non-core hours will be communicated in advance when possible.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Employees must be able to perform physically demanding tasks working outdoors in adverse environmental conditions in all weather conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, inclement weather, etc.). While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time when performing office related tasks and/or while driving for business purposes and work site locations. Field related tasks may require hiking long distances while carrying equipment and supplies with frequent walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting. Employees must be able to carry out the physical effort necessary to perform job related tasks.
