Barrick is recruiting a Principal Exploration Geologist to join our North America Exploration team.

Role

The Principal Exploration Geologist will help drive Barrick’s copper exploration activities in North America by developing a portfolio of copper-focused exploration projects with potential to meet Barrick’s geologic and economic filters. The role will be responsible for planning, leading and executing copper-focused exploration activities in North America with the objective of discovery or recognition of copper/gold deposits that will add material value while working in full alignment with Barrick’s values.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

The Principal Exploration Geologist must demonstrate proficiency in the following:

  • Maintain a safe working environment for all employees, contractors and the public
  • Perform the role of subject matter expert for copper systems in North America and ensure best practices are implemented in copper-focused exploration
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage copper-focused exploration programs in North America within budget
  • Motivate programs and effective reporting of exploration activities and implications of results
  • Assist in the development of exploration models for copper/gold deposits and target/project generation activities
  • Proactively monitor 3rd party properties; initiate reviews as warranted
  • Forward planning to ensure efficient and timely coordination of resources required for preparation and conduct of exploration activities
  • Preparation of annual programs and budgets
  • Mentor geologists and participate in progressing their technical and professional development
  • Ensure programs are consistent with Barrick’s strategic needs and goals.

Other Responsibilities Include

  • Maintain a professional work environment and encourage technical excellence from team
  • Ensure the effective collection and interpretation of exploration data, including QAQC protocols
  • Ensure that company resources are effectively utilized
  • Implement approved programs, bringing targets to decision points in a cost effective and timely manner

Specific Functional Duties Include

  • Extensive travel required
  • Solid understanding of geology, mineral camps, and prospective geologic terrain for discovery of North American copper/gold deposits
  • Coordinate peer reviews of all copper-focused exploration programs
  • Coordinate the timely and accurate compilation of exploration results and review project progress for weekly reporting
  • Contribution to the preparation and presentation of quarterly reviews
  • Preparation of material as required for inclusion in company presentations
  • Participate in annual budget project reviews

Qualifications

The successful applicant will fulfill the following education and skill level pre-requisites:

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, community and environment.
  • Masters of Sciences or PhD in Geology from a recognized institution is preferred.
  • 10-15 years of applicable experience in exploration for porphyry copper deposits in variety of geologic environments
  • Demonstrated expertise in porphyry Cu exploration
  • Self-motivated and discovery driven
  • Continued professional development and technical training
  • Demonstrated competence in ArcGIS and 3D modeling software
  • Geological/geochemical/geophysical interpretive and integration skills
  • Firm understanding and recognition of mineralization models and geological processes
  • Firm understanding of technical aspects of geophysical techniques and current best practices as applied to copper mineral exploration
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a high performing team
