Editor/Sr Editor, DK (Open to Remote)

DK is a leading publisher of New York Times bestselling influencer-led books on food and drink, self-help, health and wellness, personal finance, parenting, gardening, crafts and more. We are seeking a creative, entrepreneurial editor or senior editor to expand our influencer-led list in prescriptive nonfiction, acquiring and editing 6 to 8 titles per year that have bestseller potential. The ideal candidate will have experience publishing highly commercial books in self-help, health and wellness, and/or personal finance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify digital creators with significant social media reach and pair them with commercially viable book topics suitable to their platform;
  • Evaluate book proposals for their opportunity, originality, and fit with our influencer-led program, evaluating risk, pulling competitive titles, and creating the sales materials necessary to solicit internal support for projects;
  • Develop and maintain author and agent relationships (scout new talent, negotiate and liaise with authors and agents);
  • Consult with authors on conceptualizing the vision and execution of each book;
  • Oversee all editorial aspects of book development, including manuscript development and editing;
  • Establish and manage production schedule to meet deadlines;
  • Hire editorial freelancers and arrange assignments/briefings to guide their work;
  • Liaise with designers to coordinate photography and illustration as needed;
  • Collaborate with designers to coordinate the preparation of sales materials, and write online descriptive copy, cover copy, and other marketing copy as required;
  • Prepare supplemental material as needed, including title information sheets, early reading samples and other materials as requested for the sales force;
  • Present titles at sales meetings and elsewhere as required;
  • Coordinate with marketing/PR team on author book announcements and preorder campaigns;
  • Keep abreast of emerging influencers in the categories represented on DK’s list;
  • Participate in editorial meetings;
  • Handle special projects as assigned and work collaboratively with the larger team.

Job Requirements:

  • 3-6 years of editorial experience in publishing or relevant media;
  • Track record of acquiring, developing and publishing high-profile, profitable titles;
  • Strong knowledge of the prescriptive nonfiction market;
  • Deep network of agents, authors, and publishing freelancers;
  • Direct experience taking projects from ideation to publication, with a firm grasp of all aspects of book production (from developmental editing to line editing to proofreading) and a strong record of meeting deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability in managing multiple high-profile, complex books simultaneously;
  • Extensive book-team management experience (including designers, photographers, and writer-author collaborations);
  • Strong negotiation skills, and written and verbal communication skills, including a polished presentation style;
  • Proficiency in creative problem solving, decision making, and time management.
