Purpose:

To contribute to the Rose Publishing team through product development, development and writing of Bible reference products

To participate as a member of the Rose Publishing team by editing and preparing manuscripts for publication, managing assigned products and providing input into the overall lines

Roles And Responsibilities

General Team Support and Project Management

To support the Managing Editor in the successful development of a product line, and the processing of tasks and details attending to each assigned book, including but not limited to:

  • Fielding questions and managing communication with other departments regarding design, scheduling, and content
  • Interfacing with Editorial and Design regarding interior layouts, back cover copy and design
  • Communicating with authors regarding deadlines and (in some cases) manuscript feedback
  • Participating in cover concepting and development
  • Developing content for fact sheets
  • Being available during work hours to answer questions
  • Keeping the Managing Editor informed and involved as necessary


Product Development

Identify and recommend content for publication; support Managing Editor and Publisher in the acquisitions process:

  • Review manuscript proposals and provide recommendations regarding suitability for publication (e.g. quality of content and marketability); reject manuscripts as appropriate
  • Develop familiarity with Rose Publishing audience needs and develop product proposals to fit needs and fill product lines
  • Help identify appropriate product ideas, authors, writers, and contributors
  • Write product segments as necessary and appropriate
  • Oversee the product development plan for each assigned book
  • Work closely with the Managing Editor to provide updates on products in the pipeline and alert Managing Editor to any unresolved/uncompleted items that need attention
  • Review contracted manuscripts to determine whether they are acceptable; make recommendations to team, and in certain cases, to the author or editors on improving content; communicate manuscript acceptance to Managing Editor so that payment can be processed
  • Cultivate positive author relationships
  • Write back cover copy and various product description copy as needed
  • Attend product, positioning, and title brainstorming meetings as needed
  • Prepare and in some cases present Sales materials


Editing of manuscripts

  • Edit content and style of assigned manuscripts for publication according to Rose’s standards of quality, editorial procedures, and style guidelines
  • Maintain relationship and communication with authors/freelancers during the editing process
  • Work with free-lance editors as needed
  • Prepare style sheets to assist in communication with copyeditors/proofreaders; review copyedited manuscripts to approve changes and answer queries
  • Provide copy when needed: product summary sheets, front and back cover copy (including endorsements, as needed), author information pages


Participate in the work of Rose team

  • Communicate with team members regarding all work in progress, manuscript quality, and troublesome issues encountered in editing
  • Turn in all work on or before assigned due dates; communicate fully regarding delays or needed schedule adjustments
  • Participate in team meetings: learn about new authors and products, contribute to the development of editorial plans, review the schedules of work in progress
  • Assist team members with other tasks as needed
  • Understand the processes of copyediting and turning in manuscripts to Production


Education And Experience

  • College graduate; graduate degree in biblical studies or theology preferred
  • Experience in editorial work preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of English and familiarity with biblical languages
  • Thorough knowledge of the Bible and evangelical Christian thought
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Competent in working with computers (Office, etc.)
