Director of the Eagle STEM Scholars Program

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Physics, Geology & the Environment, the Director coordinates all aspects of Winthrop’s critically important and increasingly acclaimed Eagle STEM Scholars Program. Incumbent develops and implements scholar recruitment efforts; monitors student progress; leads and manages day-to-day operations; develops and implements data-driven metrics and tools to increase program effectiveness; works with leaders to identify and implement key initiatives; supervises up to eight student and staff employees; manages summer activities; mentors and serves as a role model for students; works closely with families and faculty; and represents the program in the local and broader communities.

Management and Administration

  • Develops, manages and markets a recruitment and data management plan for the program, which serves 50 to 70 students annually.
  • Supervises up to eight student and staff employees.
  • Oversees development and distribution of program collateral.
  • Oversees development and implementation of a dedicated website and electronic application process.
  • Represents Winthrop in making presentations to external groups; briefs oversight panels on program progress; and serves as program liaison to academic deans, faculty and staff.

Recruitment

  • Develops a data-based approach to year-round recruitment and works with faculty to award academic scholarships.
  • Develops and implements networking strategies to identify prospective participants.
  • Conducts recruitment and outreach efforts at high schools, homes, campus open houses and other settings.
  • Serves as key liaison to the university’s Enrollment Management & Marketing division.

Coordinator of Eagle STEM Activities

  • Teaches a freshman seminar course for first-year scholars.
  • Monitors the academic progress and oversees support for Eagle STEM scholars.
  • Hires and supervises program assistants, academic study hall tutors, and summer peer mentors.
  • Oversees summer bridge planning and implementation and coordination of summer student activities.
  • Coordinates with faculty on all aspects of the program.
  • Develops and implements activities to transition students from Winthrop into doctoral programs and employment and provides service learning and other professional development activities for students.

Collaborates with Faculty and Staff

  • Develops extramural funding proposals.
  • Works with University Advancement and potential donors on funding for program initiatives.
  • Teams with other key groups on campus to leverage campus resources and maximize program efforts.

Data Management and Reporting on Student Outcomes

  • Develops and implements plans for tracking scholars’ in-program achievements and post-baccalaureate placements.
  • Reports outcomes to internal and external groups.
  • Uses data to inform continuous program improvement.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics or information systems/science.
  • At least two years of work experience in the degree area and/or a college/university setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge, ability and demonstrated passion for advising/assisting college students.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage, in parallel, multiple complex tasks, staff and programs.
  • Evidence of potential for successfully managing people.
  • Effective presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to present program goals effectively and passionately serve as program advocate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Experience with Banner, Blackboard or similar academic enterprise software system.
  • Budgeting experience.
  • Recruiting and/or advising experience.
  • Experience networking with multiple organizations and at various levels across an organization.
  • Experience solving problems/resolving issues in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
