Director of L&D

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Director of L&D to join our team.

The Director of L&D will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Director of L&D will be an inquisitive, mission-driven professional, focused on developing the human capital workforce necessary toward actualizing our commitment toward achieving prosperity for all the children and families in Central Harlem—and beyond. The ideal candidate will possess the combination of technical HR skills, tactful temperament, and the ability to interweave themselves into the day-to-day complexities of an established community-based organization. This position will report to the CHRO and it’s a hybrid role with three days required in NYC office.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in HR, Business Management or related field
  • 8 + years of hands-on and progressive experience managing and leading training programs and L&D teams

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ yrs. of hands on and progressive experience managing and leading training programs and L&D teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Management, or related field
  • Knowledge and experience with the principles of adult learning, coaching and facilitation
  • Strong consultative and coaching skills and ability to effectively navigate matrixed organizational needs
  • Experience optimizing learning management systems (LMS) platforms and working knowledge of L&D best practices, tools, and methodologies
  • Understanding of career mapping and the ability to design roadmaps to enhance mobility and growth
  • Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written. Expert ability to connect with diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional presentation skills with the ability to adapt to various format and groups
  • Ability to build relationships and mentorship with staff; facilitate productive working relationships across the organization
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workload
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
  • Knowledge of key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to the L&D function
  • Virtual learning expertise

What You'll Do

  • Design, plan and execute HCZ’s overall L&D strategy for all verticals and employee levels
  • Identify and introduce new L&D programs, key skills trainings and personalized content/modules across verticals/roles/position families
  • Work in partnership with leadership of all verticals to deliver training opportunities geared toward educators and business operators
  • Develop self-paced/directed training opportunities for staff at all levels
  • Create tools and systems to evaluate effectiveness of all training initiatives; ensure analysis and measurement of all programs
  • Independently and proactively discover and identify skill gaps in workforce through focus groups, surveys and other informal methods of feedback
  • Partner with management and staff to develop, implement, monitor and see-through individualized development plans and groups trainings
  • Identify and effectively manage relationships with expert external training consultants to enhance internal curriculum
  • Oversee all mandatory compliance training programs to keep organization in compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Help develop an organizational methodology for creating an internal talent pipeline
  • Design and own leadership development initiatives, i.e.: new, mid and executive level management
  • Host professional development speaker series to reinforce previously learned best practices, theories and concepts
  • Build and administer L&D repository and library- like format ensuring access to content via diverse channels

The annual starting salary for this position is $110,000, with a comprehensive benefits package including employer-covered health insurance.
