Job Description

The Director of Marketing & Communications will work with and support the Managing Director to shape De Beers Jewellers reputation, working on key campaigns and projects across the region including how De Beers Group communicates with external audiences on the Building Forever Initiatives.

Create a compelling global market positioning for that aligns a clear strategic direction along with building a leading, sustainable global brand. Takes full responsibility for all marketing activities across North America and utilises a strong digital communication focus to ensure commercial and strategic goals are met. Partnering with the MD to help drive business performance and build a strong, unified De Beers Jewellers culture whilst being closely aligned to the commercial imperatives.

The Director is responsible for delivering the marketing & communications strategy and tools for De Beers Jewellers, as well as De Beers Group consumer facing activities. A focus of this role is to provide direction and support to the North American marketing and communications network, ensuring they are fully immersed in the Company’s strategy.

It will involve working cross-functionally and collaboratively to ensure an integrated 360° approach to marketing & communications.

Manage a team of 2 with 2 direct reports – Public Relations & Media Coordinator and Marketing Supervisor, Brand Events

Responsible for leading, motivating and inspiring the team to achieve business objectives and meet deadlines.

Communications Strategy

  • With the Managing Director, develop and implement integrated global communications strategies for De Beers Jewellers campaigns and programmes in order to build brand awareness and support business objectives;
  • Execute first class global PR campaigns and ensure they are fully immersed in the Company’s strategies; and support the successful roll out of local campaigns, as well as cross functional teams across the company;
  • Manage the creation of communications toolkits including Press Releases, PR messaging, assets and materials and disseminate to the region;
  • Develop and execute amplification plans for new product launches, communication themes/programmes and partnerships as well as initiatives within the four Building Forever pillars;
  • Develop crisis and issues management process for central and local teams and manage any central crisis situations in collaboration with Corporate Affairs team; and
  • Proactively seek new partnership opportunities for De Beers Jewellers in line with brand values, reputation and prestige

External and Internal Communications

  • Manage the creation of all PR messages for DBJ global campaigns and collections, as well as trade, corporate and consumer press materials (press releases, Q&As, factsheets), CEO statements and internal comms for global and market use;
  • Manage the dissemination of information regarding PR initiatives to the global PR network, central marketing, operations, ECA;
  • Manage writing copy, press Q&As and quotes on behalf of the Brands’ CEOs
  • Responsible for verifying all centrally driven PR messages and press materials with legal team;
  • Management of key strategic projects (e.g. Responsible Sourcing) and the creation of content/assets for cross-functional, cross-market use;
  • Manage international media requests outside of PR network; and
  • Support the ROW team and review/revise press materials where necessary.

Copywriting

  • Manage copywriting needs for regions and cross functional teams (e.g. CRM, E-commerce, Origins etc.); and
  • Proactively manage any updates of copy across all platforms.

Events

  • Manage global event calendar, including concepts/guidelines for execution;
  • Develop strategy and plan for PR events – including managing the production and delivery of the event with the support of the relevant team members;
  • Manage and oversee the quality and timely production of materials and event management (DBJ High Jewellery launch, mine trips, central jewellery schedule etc.).

VIP & Influencers

  • With the MD, develop an influencer strategy and identify global, long-term, VIP & Influencer talent with a view to amplifying our existing reach and engagement;
  • Explore and manage pay-to-play opportunities in partnership with the social media team;
  • Collaborate with the markets to define their strategies, co-ordinate celebrity dressing globally and seek out opportunities to build brand presence;
  • Evaluate regional influencers for each region, brand fit, engagement, amplification, and potentially repurpose content; and
  • Research and report on competitor’s VIP and influencer activity in the region.

Analysis

  • Manage the evaluation of global communications coverage and provide regions with observations and learnings from analysis; and
  • Set annual PR coverage targets for markets.

Marketing

  • Takes the lead and responsibility for developing and implementing all aspects of the North American marketing strategy;
  • Drives a strong focus on digital marketing to deliver commercial and strategic goals;
  • Works with Brand team to develop the brand image and emotional aspiration in line with a sustainable premium positioning in a manner that provides a firm foundation for the commercial growth of the business in the years ahead;
  • Embed a culture that is data and insights driven (strong quantitative ROI focus), set a framework that uses research-driven insights and turn these into strategic action that has a measurable impact on commercial performance;
  • Create innovative marketing plans and brand guidelines that support the vision of the business with best in class execution skills;
  • Be a spokesperson with media, agencies, industry bodies and PR and take responsibility for all external corporate affairs;
  • Act as an authority and promoter of the brand, ensuring consistent brand expression through all consumer and cultural touch points, both external and internal;
  • Responsibility marketing relationship programs; and
  • Definition and ownership of the annual marketing budgets and areas of marketing spending, working closely with the MD to achieve desired goals.

Financial

  • Responsible for managing North American Communications and Marketing budget and Capex budget;

The base salary for the position is $130-$148K USD per annum.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified with 10+ years of relevant work experience in Luxury industry (Jewellery preferred);
  • Strong communications background
  • Marketing, Communications, PR and Events expertise in the luxury and retail Industry;
  • Consumer marketing landscape, especially innovative brand communications strategies;
  • Working with different cultures and business environments;
  • Up-to-date/innovative developments across brand communications landscape, particularly social media;
  • Sustainability-related matters a plus (particularly environment, communities, gender equality);
  • Effective management of third-party agencies, Public company structures and regulatory disclosure obligationsAbility to identify the main elements of an issue or problem despite working with incomplete data;
  • Sees the main patterns, themes & linkages in information and broader implications;
  • Generates several alternative options & makes a well-reasoned decision based on an analysis of the risks & opportunities;
  • Work collabortively with colleagues to achieve shared goals;
  • Build strong, personal and effective working relationships;
  • Take risks and adapt in a fast-paced environment;
  • Be a clear, concise, creative and persuasive communicator (in writing and in person) across both internal and external stakeholders;

  • Social content management systems;
  • Monitor/optimise communications/social performance via data analytics tools;
  • Develop effective, nuanced, consumer-engaging copy for social media platforms and website;
  • Interact with and provide brand messaging to press –editors, journalists, writers –and influencers;
  • Demonstrate crisis management experience;
  • Manage budget effectively;
  • Energetic, inspires others to high performance, self-motivated with the drive to operate effectively in ambiguity;
  • Values and role models a diverse, inclusive working environment in which everyone can work to their full potential;
  • Ability to commute to office in Stamford, CT +/-2 days/week as well as recurring travel into New York, NY for appointments and engagement with relevant press & media partners; and
  • Occasional domestic and international travel as needed (up to 10%).
