Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

The Information Security Office (InfoSec) performs various functions related to cyber security. This includes, but is not limited to, user access and controls, vulnerability scanning, cyber threat intelligence gathering, and incident response.

The Selected Cyber Security Analyst Will

  • Implement technical systems and monitor them for unusual and suspicious activity across a wide range of product.
  • Assist with security configuration standards for systems and business applications.
  • Participate in technical and non-technical projects requiring information security oversight and to ensure policies, procedures and standards are met.
  • Maintain vendor management standards, questionnaires and documentations and adhere to regulatory compliance.
  • Interface with internal and external auditors for risk assessments.
  • Recommend new security solutions as well as effective improvements to existing security controls that do not negatively impact business innovations.
  • Aide in incident response (IR) with security operations center (SOC) teams.
  • Serve as liaison for the security team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree, from an accredited college including or supplemented by twenty-four (24) semester credits in cyber security, network security, computer science, computer programming, computer engineering, information technology, information science, information systems management, network administration, or a pertinent scientific, technical or related area; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its equivalent approved by a State’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and three years of satisfactory experience in any of the areas described in “1” above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2”, above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience in “2” above on the basis that sixty (60) semester credits from an accredited college is equated to one year of experience. In addition, twenty-four (24) credits from an accredited college or graduate school in cyber security, network security, computer science, computer programming, computer engineering, information technology, information science, information systems management, network administration, or a pertinent scientific, technical or related area; or a certificate of at least 625 hours in computer programming from an accredited technical school (post high school), may be substituted for one year of experience.

Preferred Skills

Preferred skills include: - Entry level cyber security certifications (attained, valid and current). - 0-3 years of cyber experience. - Expertise in incident response and system monitoring analysis. - Experience with compliance requirements. - Ability to effectively communicate business risk as it relates to information security. - Experience in conducting risk assessments that protects the business and adheres with compliance and privacy laws. - Knowledge of multiple computing platforms, including Windows, OSX, Linux, Unix, networks and endpoints. - Experience with change and project management. -Demonstrate passion to continue learning and growing in cyber security. -Highly trustworthy and leads by example. -Possess highly effective communications skills with the ability to influence business units. -Acts with integrity, takes pride in work and seeks to excel, be curious and adaptable. -Displays an analytical and problem-solving mindset. -Highly organized and efficient. -Leverages strategic and tactical thinking. -Works calmly under pressure and with tight deadlines. -Demonstrates effective decision-making skills.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
