CURATOR OF PRINTS AND DRAWINGS

SALARY RANGE: $75,000-$80,000

Position Overview

To collect, research/catalogue and maintain the prints and drawings collection and to make this collection available to a broad audience through exhibitions, publications, and educational programs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develops the prints and drawings collection in collaboration with the Director, Head of Curatorial Affairs, and other staff through gifts, purchases, and bequests. Prepares and presents proposals of gifts and purchases for the Director to put forth to the Art Committee.
  • Plans prints and drawings exhibition program and coordinates overall schedule in concert with the Head of Curatorial Affairs and other curatorial staff.
  • Organizes several exhibitions each year, including selection of objects, researching, preparing labels, publishing catalogues, and designing layouts.
  • Prepares publications and digital materials related to the prints and drawings collection and exhibitions.
  • Encourages the collecting of prints and drawings in the community by organizing an annual Print Fair, giving gallery talks, and organizing print and drawing exhibitions at the Museum.
  • Coordinates with the Head of Education to ensure effective joint planning of educational programming for permanent collection installations and temporary exhibitions.
  • Works with the Head of Education to facilitate docent training and public programs related to the prints and drawings collection.
  • Writes and presents lectures and gallery talks; schedules and/or conducts student and visitor tours of the prints and drawings collection.
  • Assists Head of Curatorial Affairs and other curatorial staff in planning in-house, travelling, and loan exhibitions.
  • Assists the Collections Manager with prints and drawings management activities including policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and oversees operating budget for the prints and drawings collection, including publications and exhibitions, working closely with the Head of Curatorial Affairs, Curator of Exhibitions, and Collections Manager.
  • Identifies and helps pursue funding and sponsorship opportunities with the Director, Head of Development, and other development staff as appropriate.
  • Hires and supervises the Douglass Foundation Intern in Curatorial Studies.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Requirements:

Museum curatorial experience, minimum five years. Knowledge of current conservation standards.

Other Skills:

Excellent writing and speaking abilities. Must have flexible work hours; evening and weekend duty occasionally required.

Education:

Master’s degree in art history, museum studies, studio art, or humanities
