General Description

The Coordinator of Health and Physical Education provides essential leadership and coordination for planning, implementation, and assessment of academic initiatives related to improvement in K-12 Health and Physical Education and Driver Education within Richmond Public Schools (RPS). The Coordinator leads the development, review, and revision of curriculum and assessments aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning. This position supports teachers and administrators through professional development, coaching, and providing appropriately aligned resources to foster student academic success. This role also requires the development of partnerships with state and local agencies whose support will aid in the growth and development of existing HPE health & physical education and driver education programs.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Facilitates curriculum development for the specified instructional areas of Health & Physical Education; coordinates the proposed curricula through the approval process; monitors curriculum program implementation & sustainability throughout the division; develops guidelines for program and materials implementation, sustainability, and renewal
  • Coordinates mandated programs and serve as liaison to the Virginia Department of Education and other education organizations; ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal policies, regulations, and accreditation standards
  • Reviews and identifies instructional materials, supplies, textbooks, technology, and equipment needed to support the implementation of curriculum; manages adoption of new textbook resources, digital subscriptions, and other curriculum materials by division guidelines and procedures; plans and provides professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators based upon implementation of these resources.
  • Provides effective coaching to support teachers & improved performance in partnership with school leadership; coordinates division-wide professional development, classroom-embedded professional development, and topic-specific training sessions for content area teachers
  • Assists in the collection, review, and submission of all requisite information for state and federal reporting
  • Develops essential standards, objectives, and assessment for health & physical education and driver education curriculum
  • Coordinates District division-wide committee for selection and recommendation of sex education materials for approval by the School Board
  • Develops and manages an annual budget related to the comprehensive health & physical education and driver education programs; maintains clear and accurate budget expenditures in compliance with the current division's financial accounting procedures
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with community stakeholders, colleges, and universities to strengthen the District division Health & PE program
  • Works well in a fast-paced environment; demonstrates a sense of urgency and zeal for ensuring all students in RPS experience success in Health & PE and driver education
  • Models professionalism, engages in self-led continuous improvement, seeks out feedback, and provides constructive feedback to colleagues
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Health & Physical Education and recent successful experience as a supervisor or Department Lead in the subject area required; add-on endorsement in Drivers Education preferred
  • Master’s degree or postgraduate certificate in Administration and Supervision required
  • Five years of successful teaching experience with three years of teaching Health & Physical Education and two years of experience managing and leading others
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of teaching techniques, instructional materials, standards-based instruction, assessments, and current trends in education
  • Understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes of education as defined in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with teachers, specialists, school administration and staff, central office staff, and members of the community
  • Ability to compose and present reports and effective, visually appealing presentations using multimedia technology
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with departmental personnel
  • Good decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop implement, monitor, and evaluate program goals and initiatives

General Definition And Conditions Of Work

Work requires the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level, and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
