College Counselor / Associate Director of College Counseling

Full-Time

Hours: 8 am-4 pm

Position Overview

Dwight School, an innovative preschool-grade 12 coeducational school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is seeking a self-directed, experienced, energetic, and empathetic College Counselor to guide approximately 30 students individually and to participate fully in the ongoing development, programming, and work of the College Counseling Office.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Director of College Counseling, the other College Counselors, and the Upper School administration to guide 11th and 12th grade students through all aspects of the college exploration and application process
  • Maintain a professional level of sensitivity to different family cultures and dynamics
  • Counsel students and parents about college options
  • Help students self-assess and research higher education and other post secondary opportunities
  • Plan standardized testing strategies
  • Develop and write official school letters of recommendation for approximately 30 students
  • Assist with all aspects of the financial aid process
  • Review college applications and transcripts
  • Meet with college representatives who visit Dwight and serve as a liaison with college admissions offices throughout the academic year, helping them to understand and appreciate our students
  • Visit colleges and universities throughout the academic year and attend national and regional college admissions counseling conferences and forums
  • Display a commitment to diversity and creating a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging in approach to teaching and learning, as they are recognized and valued by Dwight
  • Complete an online anti-bias training program in the first year of teaching
  • Participate in the life of the school beyond the college office, such as by advising a club, chaperoning trips, visiting classes, and attending occasional student productions, concerts, and sporting events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5+ years of successful experience working with students and their families in the college admissions process in a secondary school college counseling office and/or in a college admissions office
  • An in-depth knowledge of colleges and universities as well as a contextual grasp of the current college admissions landscape
  • Strong knowledge of the financial aid process
  • A desire to work intensively and collaboratively with each grade of approximately 85-105 families, eagerly welcoming conversations and encouraging interaction among students, parents and the college counseling office
  • Strong analytical writing skills
  • Active participation in local and national associations relevant to our profession, such as NACAC, CIS, ACCIS, NYSAIS, and/or NYSACAC as well as interest in attending college tours and networking with colleagues in college counseling and college admissions
  • Strong public speaking skills and the desire to participate in events for students, parents and colleagues
  • A team-oriented approach to all aspects of the college counseling process and collaborative spirit of engagement in all professional endeavors
  • Commitment to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community
  • Experience counseling a range of learners
  • Eagerness to contribute positively to the Dwight community
  • Willingness to engage with and learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Ability to bring joy, kindness, maturity, and flexibility to the school environment

Compensation: $80,000-130,000/year commensurate upon experience
