THE OPPORTUNITY

The Admissions Counselor - Women Focus is a full-time, 12-month, campus-based, administrative faculty professional exempt position in the undergraduate Admissions Office at Colorado School of Mines. The position reports to the Director of Admissions for Special Populations and is a member of the Enrollment Management team. The Admissions Counselor will promote the general goals and mission of Colorado School of Mines through the recruitment, admission, and enrollment of a qualified and diverse undergraduate student body, to provide direct services for the academic support of prospective, new, and continuing students. To encourage and support student participation in all that the campus community has to offer both academically and socially, and emphasize student retention to graduation. The position of the Admission Counselor exists to thoroughly engage in undergraduate recruitment efforts, through actively communicating the benefits of a Mines education to prospective students, their parents, counselors and other community organizations. The Admissions Counselor is primarily responsible for visiting high schools, advising prospective students and their families on admissions to Mines, and evaluating applications for admission, encouraging enrollment and other general Admissions Office activities. In addition, the Admissions Counselor will serve as the lead Admissions staff person in identifying, developing and facilitating Mines’ women recruiting efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Recruitment, Admission and Enrollment: (60%)

The Admissions Counselor will represent Mines at scheduled college day/night programs/events throughout Colorado. On occasion, travel outside the state is necessary. In addition, the Admissions Counselor will be responsible for individual visits to selected high schools throughout the academic year, and in these schools, will serve as the primary Admissions Office contact for counselors and students interested in Mines.

The Admissions Counselor will serve as a member of the Freshman Admissions Evaluation Team. He or she will be responsible to independently make admission decisions and then counsel students on those decisions. The Admissions Counselor will work closely with Mines academic and administrative faculty, and other personnel, to facilitate the successful recruitment, admission, and enrollment of new students to Mines with particular focus on prospective populations that are the strongest pipelines for the recruitment of diverse students. The Admissions Counselor will routinely meet with prospective students and their families as part of the Admissions Office on-campus, individual and small group tour and advisement program. An advisement normally includes a review of students’ academic progress and a candid assessment of students’ potential for admission and scholarship consideration. The position counsels’ students and parents and serves as the key liaison to the high school guidance and external community organizations that serve the prospective student pipelines before and after admission including through orientation, and after enrollment. Additionally, the Admissions Counselor will provide support for the fall and spring on-campus visitation programs hosted by Admissions. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: student registration, program set-up, presentation moderation, and assisting in the preparation of marketing materials for the programs. The position may be asked to support other campus programs, such as High School Counselor visits, Counselor Workshops, The SUMMET Program, Teacher Enhancement programs, New Student and Parent Orientation, and represent Mines through involvement with professional or community organizations that promote a similar mission to that of Mines Admissions Office. Evening and weekend work will be expected of this position.

Recruitment Programs specific to women: (30%)

The Admissions Counselor is assigned to identify, manage and independently coordinate the programming outreach to women interested in attending Mines. Utilizing Mines’ enrollment strategy, the Admission Counselor determines the strategies, develops the communication tracks and the outreach tactics to best fit the unique needs of women interested in attending Mines. This position will support initiatives at Mines, including coordination and facilitation of programs and conferences, specifically for women. The position will also be responsible for tracking and evaluating statistical data regarding the recruitment of women.

Admissions Liaison with the University Partners– (5%)

The Admissions Counselor will identify opportunities and implement best practices to collaborate with the staff to facilitate the successful recruitment, admission and enrollment of women to Mines.

Salary Rate And Benefits

$55,000-$57,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Demonstrated experience working with students, including those from socially, racially, and ethnically diverse populations, within a student services office at a high school, pre-collegiate program, community college or college setting.
  • Strong public speaking, written and oral communication skills.
  • Applicants must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and be highly detail oriented.
  • Travel needs of the position require successful applicants to be experienced working independently as well as within a team.
  • Aligned with above responsibilities and qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a community college, college or university admissions office.
  • Familiarity with integrated student information systems (i.e., Banner or similar system), constituent relationship management systems (i.e., Slate or a similar system), as well as word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Bilingual- Spanish and English
