I have recently discovered a tool through LinkedIn’s Talent Connect Summit, called purepost.co that helps with skill identification. This is definitely a place that people struggle and any assistance you can gain will be helpful. It also helps to practice the skill of skill identification before you need it because it is definitely something that will improve with focused attention.

In my experience, choosing the right partner is extremely important. Just because you can partner with someone doesn’t mean you should. Do you align on values? Do you have mutually beneficial goals? Is their audience and/or products complimentary to you? Knowing when to say no, is sometimes more important than knowing when to say yes.

You attract underrepresented candidates by demonstrating that you value their contribution. When you treat them as if they are some exotic and scarce resource that you have to coax into your company, that lack of understanding is evident in your marketing, in the language you use to speak to candidates, in the questions you ask during your interview process, and in the conversations you have when evaluating those candidates. Mindsets need to change before you can see change in your process.

Knowing how a career assessment tool will be used is important because many times they are given without much thought. At what point in the interview process will the assessment be given? At which point will it be reviewed? Who will be reviewing it? Will you receive a copy of your results? How much weight will be given to the results?
