As the effectiveness of today's security solutions increases, so does their complexity; and so does the risk we are all facing.

Although many great solutions are available, the implementation and licensing cost alone mean that one must choose a few solutions carefully and plan for the long term; and this is only for those who can afford premium solutions.

Some have begun to see the writing on the wall, but their approach is to create glue software that can bind various solutions together. What you end up with is a fragile rat’s nest that is difficult and costly to keep working.

This Orchestration field makes the assumption that being able to leverage many great solutions as one will result in a more cohesive approach to security. The problem is that this assumption disregards several factors:

Cost; each of those solutions believes that it is the main part of the system, and is priced accordingly. Complexity; the binding of all of those solutions does not make their maintenance and architecture go away, it only adds fragility to the system as they now must all translate between one another and coordinate their configuration and evolution. One API does not magically make individual technologies’ configurations disappear. The Evolution Reducing costs, reducing complexity and enhancing synergy between solutions.

Great security technologies are only great if they can be managed, if analysts can use them and if they are affordable. A simple solution satisfying these criteria will always be better than several advanced ones that don’t.

The evolutions from orchestration is not to provide solutions that can somehow be coerced to work together at some level. It is to have an environment providing all the base components of a security architecture in a cohesive way which makes standing up a solution and integrating it with others require a minimum of effort and maintenance.

In this paradigm, security solutions start with industry best practices, but are designed to be customized to provide value-added services. This paradigm is not the be-all-end-all of security, but rather it is the foundational building block; it is also priced accordingly.
