  • Thesis Research: "What's in an Ad? Gender Roles in American Fashion Magazines GQ and Vogue"

    -

This thesis examines the highly sexualized gender roles and negative stereotypes that have infiltrated the advertisements of American fashion magazines, particularly GQ and Vogue. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding process, and the research of Sut Jhally and Irving Goffman on gender codes, I created a basis on which to analyze the first 50 couture advertisements of the 2011 September issues. My research shows that the advertisements confirm and perpetuate these codes.
