Country specific employment types

You can now select employment types that are specific to the country in which you’ve worked and more accurately represent your professional history. Some country specific employment types are contracts, full-time, part-time, temporary staff etc.

Country specific employment types are available for the following countries:

Brazil
Canada
France
Germany
India
Japan
Netherlands
Spain
UK

All other countries will continue to use the list of definitions for employment types under the Employment types that are currently available section below. As we continue to research employment types that are specific to other countries, we will add them to the platform.

Notes:

For Canada and France, the employment types 'contract’, ‘part-time’, and ‘full-time’ have been replaced with more specific definitions.
The list under the Country specific employment types section represents either changes in the definition of a previous employment type, or the addition of a new definition for a listed country.

Canada

Employment Type	Definition
English: Self-Employed French: Travailleur autonome	Working for oneself, it may refer to sole proprietorships, entrepreneurs, small business owners etc.
English: Contract Full-time French: Contrat à temps plein	A combination of Contract and Full-time.
English: Contract Part-Time French: Contrat à temps partiel	A combination of Contract and Part-time.
English: Apprenticeship French: Apprenti	A formal/structured education and employment program a member goes through in order to gain work experience for a specific job. This usually results in certification.
English: Freelance French: Pigiste	Self-employed service providers who aren’t committed to a single employer for long-term. It may refer to gig workers, freelance photographers etc.
English: Permanent Full-Time French: Permanent à temps plein	A combination of Permanent and Full-time.
English: Permanent Part-Time French: Permanent à temps partiel	A combination of Permanent and Part-time.
English: Seasonal French: Saisonnier	A short-term contract which is limited to specific times of the year, such as winter or summer, often in specific industries only such as agriculture.
English: Casual / On-call French: Occasionnel / Sur appel	Direct employment by a company, but with no guaranteed hours.
English: Co-op French: Coop	A formal/structured education and employment program where a member attends school but also works in alternating terms (weeks, months or semesters) for credit.

France

Employment Type	Definition
Fonctionnaire	A life-time contract to work for the government, often earned by passing an official test.
Intermittent du spectacle	Employment within the entertainment industry that is ongoing, and benefits are awarded when unemployed or between contracts.
Service Civique	Working for a non-profit or public sector entity, arranged through the government.
VIE/VIA	Working for an international company or government department abroad, arranged through the government.
Intérimaire	Contract employment through a third-party, outsourced company, performed for a client company.
CDI temps partiel	Part-time employment on a permanent basis with no fixed term.
CDD temps partiel	Part-time fixed-term employment on a temporary basis.

Germany

Employment Type	Definition
Verbeamtet	A life-time contract to work for the government, often earned by passing an official test.
Freiwilliges soziales Jahr	Working for oneself, it may refer to sole proprietorships, entrepreneurs, small business owners etc.
Werkstudium	Working while in school, with specific regulations and requirements.
English: Co-op German: Duales Studium	A formal/structured education and employment program where a member attends school but also works in alternating terms (weeks, months or semesters) for credit.
English: Apprenticeship German: Azubi	A formal/structured education and employment program a member goes through in order to gain work experience for a specific job. This usually results in certification.

Netherlands

Employment Type	Definition
English: Contract Dutch: Tijdelijk contract	A temporary employment with a fixed length. Though not specified, it is often as an independent contractor directly through the company. However, it may also refer to a seasonal or otherwise temporary worker, an employee through a third-party agency etc.
English: Apprenticeship Dutch: Leerwerktraject	A formal/structured education and employment program a member goes through in order to gain work experience for a specific job. This usually results in certification.
English: Self-Employed Dutch: Zelfstandig / Eigenaar	Working for oneself, it may refer to sole proprietorships, entrepreneurs, small business owners etc.
English: Internship Dutch: Stage	An employment program that a member goes through in order to gain work experience. This typically doesn’t warrant in certification.

Japan

Employment Type	Definition
English: Permanent Japanese: 正社員・職員	Employment on a permanent basis with no fixed length.
English: Apprenticeship Japanese: 研修生・実習生	A formal/structured education and employment program a member goes through in order to gain work experience for a specific job. This usually results in certification.
English: Part-Time Japanese: パート・アルバイト	A general term that members can use to indicate that they don’t dedicate all their professional time to the position.
English: Contract Japanese: 契約社員・職員	A temporary employment with a fixed length. Though not specified, it is often as an independent contractor directly through the company. However, it may also refer to a seasonal or otherwise temporary worker, an employee through a third-party agency etc.
English: Indirect Contract Japanese: 派遣社員	Contract employment through a third-party, outsourced company, performed for a client company.

Brazil

Employment Type	Definition
English: On-Call Portuguese: Intermitente	Direct employment by a company, but with no guaranteed hours.
Trainee	A temporary, often rotational employment program for new graduates who trained for top management.
Terceirizado	Contract employment through a third-party, outsourced company, performed for a client company.

Spain

Employment Type	Definition
Formación Profesional Dual	A formal/structured education and employment program where a member attends school but also works in alternating terms (weeks, months or semesters) for credit.
Funcionario	A life-time contract to work for the government, often earned by passing an official test.
Interino	A substitute contract to work in place of a Lifetime Civil Servant.
Contrato por obra o servicio	Contract employment directly through a client company.

India

Trainee	A formal/structured education and employment program where a member attends school but also works in alternating terms (weeks, months or semesters) for credit.
