People, Nature and Climate.
About us
The world faces multiple, simultaneous crises. Widening inequality and economic turmoil threaten communities around the globe. Biodiversity is declining. The impacts of climate change — from extreme heat to destructive floods — are becoming ever-more threatening. While the transition to a better future has begun, it’s not yet happening at the speed and scale necessary. What the world needs is a great transition. And WRI has the research, partnerships and global reach to help get it right. We envision a new era in which the world can meet people’s needs while curbing climate change and protecting nature. We see a future where everyone can enjoy clean air, walkable cities, vibrant landscapes, nutritious food and affordable energy. Ecosystems are thriving. The climate is stable. We start with rigorous research, work with partners to apply evidence-based approaches globally and in focus countries, and broadly share lessons learned to create systemic change around the world.

For nearly two decades, #ACEF has been at the center of Asia’s clean energy transition...and Asia is at the center of the global #cleanenergy transition. Hear why WRI’s presence at the Asian Development Bank (ADB)'s annual conference is critical to the success for both: https://bit.ly/3wUEfeD

Kelp is important!🌿🌊👇 Research estimates that kelp forests generate approximately $500 billion annually in ecosystem services, such as capturing carbon and removing nutrient pollution such as nitrogen and phosphorous from the water column. The same research also highlights the importance of kelp forests in providing habitat for valuable fish and seafood species that supports local economies and jobs, all while protecting biodiversity. However, over the last 50 years, climate change, poor water quality and overfishing have damaged 40% to 60% of kelp forests, threatening these ecosystems and the benefits they provide. With the deadline for EUDR drawing closer, the number of tools and solutions that purportedly help with compliance is multiplying. This highlights how complex and challenging the journey to EUDR compliance can be – but every journey starts with a first step, and GFW Pro is a trusted, cost-effective starting point for meeting due diligence requirements. Our latest blog discusses how our tools can support risk assessment 📊 across different commodities and countries, which maps and data sets on our platform are relevant to the EUDR 🗺️, and why publicly available data remains valuable in a rapidly evolving landscape. 🌳 Learn more here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eyyuFqz3 #gfwpro #deforestation #supplychains #climate #eudr #sustainability #forests

Executive Director, Good Energies | Board Chair, World Resources Institute Brazil | Board, Arapyaú | Advisory Board, SELCO India
Every day, the World Resources Institute team works with rigor and vigor to deliver a great transition that is good for #people, #nature and #climate. As a reflection on key lessons learnt, on programmatic and institutional achievements obtained, and as a sign of gratitude to serve on WRI's Global Board of Directors, it is a privilege to share our 2023 Annual Report. As you can see, a key highlight last year was the presentation of #WRI’s five-year strategy for 2023-2027, entitled "Getting the Transition Right for People, Nature and Climate." To realize this strategy, WRI is working to transform the three human systems responsible for driving inequality, destroying ecosystems and fueling climate change - #food, #land and #water; #energy; and #cities. Through this great transition, we can secure a cleaner, safer, fairer world. Another highlight last year was the launch of a report by WRI Brasil and the New Climate Economy, entitled “New Economy for the Brazilian #Amazon”, finding that, compared to the current development model, decarbonizing #Brazil’s Amazon economy could generate an additional 312,000 jobs; R$40 billion in GDP (US$8.2 billion); and 81 million hectares of forests, increasing carbon stock by 19%. Last but not least, I would like to highlight the launch of the #Enterprise Fund. Although WRI has grown at a significant rate, which is a testament to our growing reputation as a trusted partner, it has occurred mostly through restricted, project-specific funding. With this in mind, WRI launched the Enterprise Fund, an investment in the engine of WRI, to be deployed into four priority areas: - First, innovation to build new tools, leverage emerging technologies and test new ideas, approaches and platforms. WRI is the world leader in using #machinelearning, #AI and #satellite data to protect our planet. - Second, rapid response capacity to react to time-sensitive opportunities when they arise. Leaders and partners come to WRI because we bring the right people and science together to create durable results. WRI must have the financial wherewithal to respond when opportunities arise. - Third, building strong country programs to ensure each WRI office has staff with the technical expertise and deep networks necessary to bring about a transition to a thriving, sustainable and low-carbon future. - Fourth, strengthening global capabilities and infrastructure, including boosting our engagement and communications to sharpen our political influence and expand our partner base, and equipping staff with training and technical skills necessary to meet growing demand for WRI’s unique blend of analytical and convening capabilities. * If you are interested to learn more about this Enterprise Fund, please let me know! For more details on operations and finance, while recognizing with gratitude the vision and generosity of our donors, see our 2023 Annual Report below, or download in the following link: https://lnkd.in/gc9fis25 🙏🏽🌍🌳

This #WorldEnvironmentDay, we celebrate the incredible resilience of Indigenous communities in Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan, Philippines. Following the devastation caused by Typhoon Odette, these communities faced the task of rebuilding their lands and livelihoods. Through the #PricelessPlanet Coalition's restoration local project, they are now not only helping restoring forests and critical habitats but also helping mitigate climate change, support biodiversity, and improve their resilience to climate and economic challenges. These initiatives are a testament to the power of the Priceless Planet Coalition's commitment to restoring 100 million trees through collaboration across Mastercard, Conservation International, World Resources Institute, and over 150 partners. #PricelessPlanet #climateresilience #sustainability #WorldEnvironmentDay

There’s a growing movement among faith-based organizations to support & lead on forest restoration. They could play a much bigger role moving forward. Thanks to their broad influence, significant land holdings and, in many cases, pro-environmental values, faith-based groups can be powerful allies in restoration projects worldwide.
