We love a happy ending. Alexis Cammack, one of our maintenance supervisors in Snohomish County, spotted a bicycle at the Smokey Point safety rest area that seemed out of place. And thus began her quest to find the owner... Alexis called local law enforcement and Washington State Patrol to see if they had any reports of a stolen bike matching the description. Coming up short, she called multiple REIs to see if they could match up the bike information with the original owner. She found the REI the bike was purchased from, and - with the information REI provided - she discovered the owner lived in Anacortes. Alexis reached out to Anacortes Police Department, and they were able to confirm they had a report of stolen bike from December matching the information that Alexis had gathered. When Alexis finally connected with the owner, she found out how much this bike meant to him. Gilbert Doebler has Potocki-Lupski syndrome and isn’t able to drive. This bike was how he got to work. When his bike was stolen, he was devastated. He had other bikes he could use, but this one used to be his brother’s bike and was his favorite. Alexis went above and beyond and was able to return the bike to the rightful owner. When Gilbert and his family saw the bike again, they were elated. It was just the same as he remembered, and he couldn’t wait to hop back on it. Alexis has been with us for 7 years and has quickly worked her way up to a supervisor after starting as a highway maintenance worker. We are proud of her and her initiative to do the right thing. She is an amazing example of our crews and the extra steps they take to keep our communities moving! #wsdot #reunion #bicycle #activetransportation #feelgood #highwaymaintenance
