We train women to run for office and win.

Info

Vote Run Lead trains women to run for office. And win. With more than 55,000 women trained to run for office, Vote Run Lead is the largest and most diverse campaign and leadership program in the country. We work to equip women with the right know-how, trainings and how-to’s to help them enter politics with a purpose. We believe that by empowering women to run as they are, they will build a campaign based on their own passion, their own ideas and their own values.

We admire and uplift women who step forward to serve in public office despite the risk of political violence. In this report by reporter Lucia Starbuck, KUNR spotlights the stories of Nevada officials and candidates describing how they confront harassment, and shares suggestions of how to mitigate it. For example, Nevada State Assemblywoman Angie Taylor (pictured), still insists on conducting in-person community meetings despite online and public harassment. VRL’s Chief Political Officer, Sabrina Shulman, also offers her perspective on this ongoing concern for our community. Thanks also to KUNR for sharing our message and (free!) campaign safety resources on VRLHQ.org. Being a woman in politics shouldn't make you a target for harassment, but it’s common. This Searchlight New Mexico piece focuses on New Mexico officials and legislators, but know that women and gender-expansive people nationwide routinely face similar hostility every day. Read more: https://bit.ly/4e8Ul4W VRL’s New Mexico state director, Angelica Rubio, describes the chilling effect that violence and intimidation can have on how people participate in policymaking and democracy, and why we must fight back: "When you have some of your closest friends — who happen to be colleagues both in policy work and in movement work — enduring this type of violence (or the potential of it), that makes you rethink whether you want to continue in this work. You may ask yourself if it's worth it. We have a responsibility to not only elect women and gender-expansive people to office but also to ensure that they have the support and community needed to carry on their service — without having to put their life on the line." Mexico just elected their first female president! Though our work is based in U.S. politics, we can’t let this significant international achievement go without comment. The election of Claudia Sheinbaum, a climate scientist who identifies as culturally Jewish, represents many barriers broken in North American politics. We also note that her most significant opposition was senator and businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez. We appreciate this article from Time, which offers context for the ongoing fight for gender parity in Mexico’s politics, and the country's struggle to ensure women’s rights, safety and security overall. 📊 The Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University just dropped a new field analysis of women currently running in state elections. We are particularly interested in the findings regarding statehouse candidates, like: “Women are a larger proportion of all major-party state House candidates in 2022 than 2024” and “Women are just over one-third of major-party state House candidates in 2024... women are nearly 50% of Democratic state House candidates this year, they are 25% of Republicans running for state Houses.” Read more: https://bit.ly/452Gd9j Vote Run Lead has a vision of women and gender-expansive people holding at least 51% of state legislature seats, creating a reflective democracy.
