Following a lab tour we hosted for Bloomberg reporter Riley Ray Griffin, a story appeared today showcasing Verily Wastewater's vital role in #H5N1 avian bird flu monitoring. The piece highlights our collaboration with WastewaterSCAN, emphasizing impact in early detection of the virus and illustrates how the H5 assay development and its recent detection in Iowa samples underscore the significance of wastewater monitoring as an early warning system. "...Verily Principal Scientist Bradley White showed me a spreadsheet his team uses to analyze results. Some sewage samples had recently raised eyebrows. They found that a sample from Iowa, for example, had recently demonstrated those bird flu genetic signatures. “That’s interesting, because there’s not a known dairy cattle outbreak in Iowa yet,” White said. Wastewater surveillance works a little like a smoke detector. An early warning to someone, somewhere, that there might be a fire. “We let their public health people know,” White said. “They’re looking into it.” The next day, the Iowa Department of Agriculture said it had identified a dairy herd infected by bird flu....." #PublicHealth #WastewaterMonitoring #H5N1Detection

Verily Wastewater, a wastewater-based epidemiology, can accurately and proactively measure the concentration of viral and bacterial DNA and RNA for 13+ pathogens in wastewater — in near real time. Most recently, in response to H5N1 cases, Verily scientists rapidly developed an assay to detect H5 in wastewater and tested areas in Texas where dairy cattle had tested positive. We’re currently testing for H5 at more than a hundred wastewater sites in over 40 states across the country, in partnership with WastewaterSCAN. Our work suggests that proactive wastewater surveillance testing can serve as a public health monitoring tool by detecting new and emerging animal pathogens with zoonotic potential, like H5N1. Chief Medical & Scientific Officer advancing precision health @ Verily, an Alphabet company | ex-Apple, Gates Foundation
A transformation in public health surveillance is underway. The traditional, resource-heavy surveillance systems of the past are now augmented by newer, more advanced approaches to wastewater pathogen surveillance. For example, in March, wastewater samples from select areas of Texas, the apparent epicenter of the H5N1 outbreak, revealed the presence of H5. In response, the Verily team rapidly developed an assay to detect H5 in wastewater. We’re currently testing for H5 at hundreds of wastewater sites on behalf of and in partnership with public health officials across the country and with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I shared some of my thoughts on the power of wastewater pathogen testing to form a surveillance network to augment existing data from health systems and build proactive actions that can be taken to protect populations broadly. https://lnkd.in/g7Z6BGxu

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with more than one in six U.S. adults reporting they are depressed or receiving treatment for depression.* By understanding their experiences across time and in a real-world setting we can pave the way for more effective treatments. Learn about the ‘My Mental Health Journey’ longitudinal registry study that we worked with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies (U.S.) to launch. The aim is to advance research in depression and mental health to support the development of more precise treatment options: https://veri.ly/3UXmRhc *https://veri.ly/3V5IfB7 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #MentalHealth #PrecisionHealth
