Listen to our recent conversation with Janet Michael on the Valley Today podcast about Valley Health's partnership with Blue Ridge Hospice at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. The conversation highlights the available resources, such as social workers, chaplains, volunteer services, and grief support, which are crucial for both patients and healthcare providers. We also discussed the difference between hospice and home health care, clarifying that hospice also provides physical, speech, and occupational therapies aimed at improving the patient's comfort and quality of life. The 2024 Neuroscience Symposium took place on May 21 at the George Washington Hotel in Winchester, Va. Nearly 100 nurses, physician assistants, physicians, and other healthcare workers attended the conference, which centered around the theme “Living Better: Enhancing Quality of Life with Innovative Care”. Presenters included a former Valley Health patient, who joined the conference virtually and delivered a captivating story of his journey to seizure freedom and how his life has changed for the better. The patient received care from Dr. Paul Lyons and Dr. Lee Selznick, along with supporting team members with the Virginia Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Winchester Medical Center.

Congratulations to the Vascular Care Team at Winchester Medical Center for receiving three stars (the highest score possible) from the Society for Vascular Surgery’s Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) for the sixth consecutive year. Our participation in this program supports our commitment to provide the best quality practices and standard of care for treating vascular diseases, including conditions of the veins and arteries. "The distinction is directly attributable to the hard work and dedication of our team of vascular surgeons, vascular physician assistants, database abstractors, office staff, nursing, and hospital administration," said vascular surgeon Matthew J. Borkon, MD, FACS. "It requires a cooperative team effort to achieve this recognition."

Receive training for pediatric mental health through The REACH Institute. Training will be held August 22, 23 and 24 at The George Washington Hotel in Winchester. Valley Health and community providers are encouraged to attend. To register, email Rhoda DeStefano, [email protected]. The cost of the class is covered by Valley Health. This training provides clinicians with the tools to diagnose and treat mental health conditions they see daily in practice. Providers caring for children or adolescents in a pediatric or family practice are highly recommended to attend this in-person training. The first of this training was offered in March and was very successful. Of those in attendance, all felt their knowledge of assessing and treating mental health in pediatric patients improved after the class, and the participants highly recommended this class to other providers. Sierra Cuppett, PA, specializing in family medicine, said it’s the most valuable CME/training she’s ever taken. In addition to the pediatric mental health training, an online adult module is also available. This online-only series offers the opportunity to learn on your own time, at your own pace. Participants learn to diagnose and treat common adult mental health concerns, including anxiety, ADHD, depression, and substance use. Topics include assessment, somatic presentations, chronic pain, opioid use, and much more. This 7-hour training is split into 40–60-minute modules, and 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are awarded after completion. The $250 fee will be covered for Valley Health providers. To register, email Rhoda DeStefano, [email protected]. Visit TheREACHInstitute.org for more information
