America's Innovation Agency

About us

For over 200 years, the basic role of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has remained the same: to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution). Under this system of protection, American industry has flourished. New products have been invented, new uses for old ones discovered, and employment opportunities created for millions of Americans. The strength and vitality of the U.S. economy depends directly on effective mechanisms that protect new ideas and investments in innovation and creativity. The continued demand for patents and trademarks underscores the ingenuity of American inventors and entrepreneurs. The USPTO is at the cutting edge of the Nation’s technological progress and achievement. The USPTO is a federal agency in the Department of Commerce. The USPTO occupies several interconnected buildings in Alexandria, Virginia. The office employs more than 13,000 people -- including engineers, scientists, attorneys, analysts, computer specialists -- all dedicated to protecting U.S. intellectual property rights. At the USPTO, the talents of all our colleagues enrich our vibrant workplace, and we celebrate and value each one.

Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property joined representatives from across government and industry including Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Asst. Attorney General Jonathan Kanter, and former Secretary Condoleeza Rice, to address leading questions around AI and competition. “When I think about the potential of AI, it’s about innovation. It’s about the economy,” said Director Vidal. “If we don’t have strong intellectual property we don’t have new market entrants because they need IP in order to get funding and in order to compete. At the USPTO and Dept. of Commerce we know that to grow the economy and create jobs we need both strong IP and competition.” Watch the full day’s discussion at: https://bit.ly/4bVCIUc

On any given day, patent examiners could be reading about a new type of drone, futuristic clothing, interactive eBooks, biofuels, or autonomous vehicles! They determine the scope and adequacy of a patent application by searching existing technology. This research plays a critical role in protecting and promoting American innovation. Examiners also make decisions on the patentability of claimed inventions, respond to applicants, and issue notices. Our patent examiners advance innovation — one application at a time! If you’re a U.S. citizen with a STEM degree, take advantage of this work-from-home opportunity and apply: https://bit.ly/patent-23.

As a child, Jim West spent time tinkering with things and opening them up, finding out what made them work. His early investigations involved objects ranging from his grandfather's pocket watch to an old radio someone had thrown out. After his family discovered the disassembled pocket watch, they knew they had to keep him busy. "It's always been a part of my curiosity," West said. "Taking things apart is easy. The hard part is putting them back together again." West was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999 for his electret microphone that has advanced the sound industry and become the standard microphone used in products from music recording equipment to hearing aid devices.
