For the first time in years, more people are leaving startups than joining them. The latest data from Carta, shows a massive change in the startup ecosystem. In 2023, departures counted for a staggering 47% compared to hires at 53%. This marks a significant shift from the hiring boom of 2021. When we started Underdog.io, we would say the best companies should always be hiring. After living through the last few years, I think the phrasing needs improvement, but the sentiment is still right. Good companies should practice proactive hiring, monitoring the landscape for individuals who could significantly impact their business. By surveying the market, you're putting your company in a better position to hire exceptional talent. You have leverage because you know what else is available. You're also less likely to be caught in a situation without a pipeline of qualified people excited about your company.
