Enabling scientific discoveries that improve human health

About us

UK Biobank is a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing genetic, lifestyle and health information from half a million UK participants. UK Biobank’s database, which includes blood samples, heart and brain scans and genetic data of the 500,000 volunteer participants, is globally accessible to approved researchers who are undertaking health-related research that’s in the public interest. UK Biobank recruited 500,000 people aged between 40-69 years in 2006-2010 from across the UK. With their consent, they provided detailed information about their lifestyle, physical measures and had blood, urine and saliva sample collected and stored for future analysis. UK Biobank’s research resource is a major contributor in the advancement of modern medicine and treatment, enabling better understanding of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of serious and life-threatening illnesses – including cancer, heart diseases and stroke. UK Biobank is generously supported by its founding funders the Wellcome Trust and UK Medical Research Council, as well as the Department of Health, Scottish Government, the Northwest Regional Development Agency, British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK. The organisation has over 150 dedicated members of staff, based in multiple locations across the UK.

We're excited to announce that construction has started on our £60M Greenheys development at Manchester Science Park with Willmott Dixon as lead contractor. Scheduled to complete in Summer 2026, this transformational project will offer 131,000 sq ft of specialised lab spaces designed for diagnostics, genomics, biotech, and precision medicine companies. Excitingly, Greenheys will be the future HQ for UK Biobank, the world’s most comprehensive source of health data for research. UK Biobank will occupy three floors with the relocation dramatically increasing the speed at which they can supply samples to researchers - allowing for the storage of more samples, and being more environmentally efficient. Situated within Europe’s largest clinical academic campus, and with cutting-edge facilities and connections to Manchester's Oxford Road Corridor knowledge quarter, Greenheys will be a significant driver of innovation and economic growth in the region. It’s our 10-year imaging anniversary! We have been scanning the brains, hearts, bones and abdomens of tens of thousands of our volunteers for science for a decade now. To celebrate this milestone, we are sharing 10 examples of how these images have been used so far to better understand human disease. Here are some highlights: ❤️ Heart MRI scans showed diabetes can cause changes such as thicker left ventricle walls, helping to diagnose heart damage earlier in those with diabetes. 🦠 Brain MRIs taken before and after infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 highlighted that even mild COVID-19 cases can lead to tissue damage, as well as reduction in areas of the brain linked to smell. 🧠 And brain MRIs were also analysed alongside biological samples such as blood to reveal that the ‘biological age’ of an organ can impact the ageing process of other organs around the body. This finding could aid in the earlier diagnosis of age-related diseases. Our CEO Prof Rory Collins and Chief Scientist Prof Naomi Allen discuss UK Biobank’s vast data storage in a new Amazon Web Services (AWS) blog. AWS hosts our purpose-built, secure cloud-based platform where researchers can access UK Biobank’s vast database. This is known as the UK Biobank Research Analysis Platform. This enables researchers to access and analyse our 30-petabyte large dataset in a centralised environment, giving them the flexibility to manage increasing quantities of data. To learn more about how this platform represents a step in “UK Biobank’s journey to becoming a globally accessible dataset for health researchers”, read the full blog below: https://shorturl.at/pEJZ1
