We're proud of the award-winning equitable care we provide to our LGBTQ+ patients, and excited to highlight the 🌈 Rainbow Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic during Pride! Located at our Mount Zion Hospital, it's the first dedicated IBD clinic for LGBTQ+ folks on the West Coast. Led by Dr. Justin Field, the clinic provides a safe haven and raises awareness within the LGBTQ+ community about the critical importance of IBD screenings. IBD stands for #InflammatoryBowelDisease, which includes conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and affects many aspects of daily life. The clinic offers a supportive environment where LGBTQ+ individuals with IBD can feel comfortable and respected while discussing their health needs, and can receive affirming care.

Spending time in nature or engaging in calming activities like meditation, knitting or gardening can benefit mental and physical health by rejuvenating our cells. Research led by UCSF’s Alexandra Daisy Crosswell, PhD and Elissa Epel connects activities like painting or yoga to changes in the nervous system and cell health, leading to a restorative state that promotes healthy aging. “We live in a food environment that is constantly pressuring people to make indulgent decisions,” Dr. Diana Thiara says. “On top of that, genetics predispose some people to having excess weight.” Weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound have the potential to usher in much-needed nuance in how Americans understand obesity. As these drugs have gained in popularity they’ve also sparked debate. https://ucsfh.org/3RysEJb

UCSF research really is out of this world: Since the first missions to the moon, science has understood that space travel takes a toll on the body. "Space flight conditions induce aging of immune cells in bone, blood vessels and the liver," explains UCSF's Sonja Schrepfer, M.D., Ph.D., which makes space a nearly perfect laboratory to study aging. This is why Schrepfer partners with NASA to send tissue samples into orbit on the International Space Station. Working alongside Tobias Deuse, MD, MD, Schrepfer hopes that understanding how, for example, liver cells age and weaken in space will one day unlock new liver disease treatments on Earth. "Patients inspire us to work faster ... to think about next steps and new therapeutic strategies,” she says. https://lnkd.in/e9yzFXy3

"Belonging—not just fitting—is essential for success." Our neighbors at the California Academy of Sciences featured Dr. Julie Ann Sosa in a recent New Science profile. Read about how Dr. Sosa came to do her "dream job" at UCSF and about her commitment to inclusion in surgery.

New research from University of California, San Francisco shows that #diabetes distress—the worries and burdens associated with having diabetes—can be halved within a year when patients are provided with resources to help manage the emotional burden of the condition. When their distress is reduced, patients are better able to manage their diabetes. Based on the research, the UCSF Diabetes Center has begun to incorporate screening for diabetes distress. “If you don’t address the emotional part of living with the illness, you don’t do well,” Dr. Umesh Masharani says. “It’s important that clinicians are trained on how to have these conversations with their patients with diabetes as part of normal care.” https://ucsfh.org/4b0ZYzx

Congratulations to everyone who worked on this agreement to support labor and small business as we modernize and upgrade our Oakland children's hospital and facilities!
Exciting news for Children's Hospital in Oakland! Today, we celebrated the signing of a Community Workforce Agreement (CWA) that prioritizes local #union workers for the construction of our proposed hospital and site improvement project. "This hospital and project are vital to the city of Oakland, and so, too, is supporting the construction and trades workers of our community, said Nicholas Holmes, M.D., MBA, President of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. City of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb attended the signing, as did Building & Construction Trades Council of Alameda County and other community leaders.
