We had a very productive meeting with U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to advocate for a Black economic agenda that prioritizes entrepreneurship and accountability. Leader Jeffries committed to using the full weight of his office, and his Caucus, to ensure there’s transparency and equity in the billions of contracting dollars set to flow through the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act. These particular, lesser known spending bills total $350B, and many entrepreneurs don’t even know that small business inclusion is mandatory for compliance. USBC will continue to monitor progress of contract awards, and advocate for more technical assistance to businesses that are poised to compete in the Federal marketplace.

Today, as we observe Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. This day holds a profound significance as we reflect on the courage and dedication of all those who have served in the Armed Forces, especially the Black soldiers who fought valiantly, often without the rights and recognition they so rightly deserved. Throughout history, Black soldiers have demonstrated unparalleled valor and resilience, fighting for freedoms and rights that were not always afforded to them. From the Buffalo Soldiers and the Tuskegee Airmen to those who served in more recent conflicts, their contributions have been pivotal in shaping our nation's history and ensuring the liberties we enjoy today. They fought with the hope that their sacrifices would pave the way for a more just and equal society. On this Memorial Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to all servicemen and servicewomen who have fought for our freedoms. Your sacrifices are not forgotten, and your legacy continues to inspire us in our ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. As a mark of respect and to allow our staff to reflect on this important day, the USBC offices will be closed today, May 27, 2024. We will resume our operations tomorrow, May 28, 2024. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our shared mission. Let us honor the memory of those who have served by recommitting ourselves to the principles of freedom, diversity, equality, and justice for all.

Fresh Off The Press published by The Brookings Institution! This insightful article, authored by Ron Busby, Sr. , President & CEO of U.S. Black Chambers, Inc., and Bibi Hidalgo, Nonresident Senior Fellow at Brookings Metro, delves into the detrimental impact of companies' failure to disclose contracting spend data on minority-owned businesses. Emphasizing the significance of data transparency, it highlights its role in fostering equitable opportunities and addressing systemic biases. Lacking access to such data, minority-owned enterprises struggle to compete for contracts and access resources. The article underscores the importance of policy measures and corporate accountability in mitigating these disparities and promoting diversity and inclusion in the contracting process. Offering valuable perspectives, it warrants consideration in our ongoing efforts to defend, amend, protect, and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
