The Retreat at Silvies Valley Ranch is a luxury guest retreat nestled within a historic working cattle ranch in the Blue Mountains of Central Oregon. Guests enjoy award-winning links-style golf, horseback riding, fishing, cattle wrangling, ATV rides, a destination spa, pistol shooting and much more. The Retreat’s custom-designed rooms and cabins evoke authentic Western chic and overlook stunning vistas, and cuisine is centered around preparations of the ranch’s own grass-fed beef and chevon (goat), and locally sourced vegetables. Founded in 1883, Silvies Valley Ranch is an ecologically sustainable Western cattle ranch with 4,500 cattle, 3,000 goats, abundant healthy wildlife, waterways, mountain meadows and Ponderosa pine forest. Made up of 150,000 acres of deeded and leased forest lands, Silvies aims to set the standard for sustainable ranching and environmental stewardship in the high desert. A few weeks ago work took me to Oregon to visit The Retreat at Silvies Valley Ranch to complete their first accreditation visit to be approved for membership into The Dude Ranchers' Association. Our organization takes approval of dude ranches into the Association very seriously and putting “boots on the ground” (literally) is just one part of the extensive membership process. The DRA takes great pride in the ranches and experiences we represent and promote to people. I was so pleased to report to my Board of Directors that The Retreat at Silvies Valley Ranch was most definitely up to DRA standards. I am grateful that my wonderful co-worker and friend Katie Schrock got to tag along with me and enjoy this amazing property. We rode horses, explored homesteads, fed baby goats, enjoyed great company and learned so much about the ranch, conservation, goats, ranching operations and successful business practices. Many days I am still in awe that this is part of my job and “office”.
