Congratulations to our 2024 Laura Grace Award Recipient, Genny Lutzel. We look forward to honoring you this Friday, May 31st at Jub Jam XIII. A little about Genny and her Caregiving Journey: For a decade, Genny Lutzel lovingly cared for her mother, Paula Spangler, who battled early-onset Alzheimer's. Paula relocated from Pennsylvania to Texas in 2013, where Genny resided, as her condition deteriorated. Genny visited her mother regularly, offering companionship, assistance with daily activities, and advocating for her healthcare needs. Genny's involvement extended to addressing issues at the care facilities, thanks to The Senior Source's support. She used their ombudsman program to effect positive changes in her mother's living conditions. Genny also engaged in caregiver support and education programs, further expanding her knowledge and support network. The COVID-19 pandemic presented additional challenges, with restricted visitation rights. Genny became an essential caregiver, following rigorous protocols to spend quality time with her mother. She joined forces with Mary Nichols and their grassroots advocacy group, Texas Caregivers for Compromise, to secure visitation rights for institutionalized loved ones. Their collective efforts resulted in the passing of the Essential Caregiver Act in the 2021 Texas legislature, granting residents the right to essential caregiver visits during public health emergencies. Sadly, Paula Spangler passed away in December 2022, but her legacy lives on through Genny Lutzel's dedication and advocacy on behalf of caregivers and those they care for. You are seen, heard, and appreciated by us, Genny! Thank you for your continuing efforts and resiliency.

Atmos Energy donated $75,000 to assist older adult customers struggling with natural gas bills and debt. The Senior Source team sprang into action, serving over 500 seniors at a "Bill Pay Blitz" on Feb 21. Tommie Thompson, a grateful attendee, shared: “After the freeze [in February], my bill jumped up to over $200. When you’re used to something between $73 and $93, to get something that is over $200 is a shock. And when you’re on a fixed income, those types of things impact you, really. It was just a blessing to even see this, that they were doing this today. I’m grateful.” Thank you, Atmos Energy, for your generous financial contribution that helped Tommie and even more seniors like her!
