Independent K-6 school for students with dyslexia. Helping them build a solid foundation to thrive in school and life.
About us
The official LinkedIn page for The Schenck School. For more than 60 years, we have taught students to advocate for themselves and to celebrate their dyslexia. They learn to view themselves as smart, independent learners capable of great things. Using the Orton-Gillingham Approach to phonics instruction, we are fully committed to helping students in K-6 who are struggling with reading. Through our comprehensive education program and emphasis in our curriculum, we build skills not only in Sound and Word Level Reading and Spelling, Reading and Writing, but also in Handwriting, Vocabulary, Fluency, Math, and Science/Social Studies. As we teach our students to thrive in and out of our classrooms, we also prepare them to successfully transition back to mainstream schools when the time is right. Through our students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumni, we continue to impact the dyslexia world. We share our knowledge on dyslexia through various outlets, including our outreach program ReadSource, and continue our education in the best practices to help advocate and celebrate dyslexics. We are accredited by Orton-Gillingham Academy, Georgia Association of Private Schools for Exceptional Children (GAPSEC), Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS/COGNIA). We also are affiliated with The Dyslexia Foundation (TDF), the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and others. Learn more about what we do at our website and other social media platforms.

Dear Outplacing Families, As your student begins their exciting next adventure, here are a few tips as they start the new journey! ✏️ Avoid summer learning loss. Keep your students reading, writing, & practicing math skills. This will help them continue building those neural pathways in their brains. 📣 Encourage your child to self-advocate. Help them find solutions for themselves, & only step in as needed. 🏅 Encourage after-school activities. Be careful not to overcommit, but find a healthy balance for your child's academics & social activities. Be sure to come to our virtual "50 Tips for Outplacing Families" meeting to hear the rest of our tips! They are on May 1 at 7 p.m. and May 2 at 9 a.m. Check your parent newsletter from April 25 for the link to the Zoom!

We are so thankful that Dr. Paul Riccomini stopped by campus this week to talk about "Understanding Dyscalculia: Strategies for Understanding Math Learning" and chat with our teachers and parents about how they can support their students in math. Dr. Paul Riccomini is an accomplished author, researcher, academic, teacher, and speaker on dyscalculia. A Pennsylvania State University professor with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate in Special Education from Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Paul Riccomini, has researched and written on this topic. We have enjoyed having Dr. Riccomini on campus this week to speak to our teachers, parents, and community.

As the 5th grade heads out on their field trip to the College Football Hall of Fame, we are reminded of our own 5th-grade teacher, Ann Reid Young's video about the importance of field trips. Field trips are especially important for students with dyslexia. They offer a visual and hands-on learning experience, making it easier for these students to connect what they learn with its real-world application.
